IPSC load im asking cause i dont think it makes major but not sure....

4.9gr Winchester 231

200gr semi-wad cutter

winchester large pistol primers

out of a 1911 what would you guess, or if you run this load what does it chronny for you?

heres the conversation from another forum. me and another guy talking.

he says.....i am glad you liked them.. I actually spent a fair amount of time working it out. Although it isn't anything special - I thought it was a great balance in my Spring Field.

I am pretty anal about weighing the bullets and checking the powder and measuring the set and crimp for my match loads

i said..

hey does 4.9 make major? Just courious i did like the load it was nice accurate and didnt recoil bad. What FPS is it going? i just called grandpa and he told me his "favorite" 45ACP load is 200 lSWC, Winchester primer and 5.6gr of Winchester 231. This load gives him 900 fps from his 5" 1911 pistol and 870 fps from his Sig220.

For accuracy, he said he goes down to 5.1 gr of 231 for about 800 fps from 5" 1911 and 760 fps from Sig 220.

Hes been using Winchester 231 for about 17 years now and he still think it is one of the best powder for 45ACP. I need to get him shooting clays, its clean and makes major with less powder so will save more coin in the long run.

My pet load is 200 gr LSWC 4.1/4.2 clays and makes major in a 5"1911. be carefull and work up 4.3 is max load for clays. 3.5 is a great practice load but 3.6/3.7 is needed to work my slide when it gets cooler. -chris

edit***im courious because he said out of a 5" springer he averages 825fps.... way off from grandpas data.

any input would be great thanks... -chris

bullet weight X FPS divided by 1000 must be 165 or greater

like 200gr LSWC x 825 fps= 165,000 divided by 1000 = 165 that is the min for "major" power factor. 165 and up is major and less than 165 puts you in the minor power factor class. 1911 stock with 7/8 round mags is the single stack class were in, if you use 10 round mags you go to limited 10. i think the power factor is the same. 165 and up for major. -chris

Target - he is asking about the IPSC/USPSA power factor.
Jack - no, 4.8 gr of Win 231 is not enough to make major, it's probably not enough to cycle a 1911 unless you use a light spring.

My load is 5.6 gr of Win 231 under 200gr SWCs, it makes major reliably, and cycles a 1911 with 16 or 18 pound springs.

You will have to get that 200 gr bullet to travel at least 825 fps to make Major but going for 850 fps will be safer because of variations when testing. I'm guessing you will have to charge 5.2 gr W231 under that 200 gr Lead bullet to make Major but like said above, that round might not cycle a fill size 1911. A charge of 5.6 gr will give you right around 900 fps and will cycle for sure since "Linear Thinker" said it will!! LOL Anything less than 5.2 gr of W231 probably won't reliable make Major.
