Hello everyone, I'd like to pick your brains for a moment. I'm sorry if this post is a mess. My brain is scrambled. I recently purchased a new Tikka T3X in .270, 22" stainless barrel. The main issue I have is deciding what powder and bullet to use. I have narrowed it down though. So what I'm trying to decide to use is: I have new Nosler brass and Star Line brass. I have IMR 4831 and H4831sc. For bullets I have the Sierra 140 Game Changer and the 145 ELDx. I'll most likely use my Nosler brass. I can't decide on a primer either, and I pretty much have all the common primers, and I also have some Federal 210m's. Should I go with the ever so slightly faster powder (IMR 4831) since I have a 22" barrel?

Given the listed components, I’d say whichever gives the best accuracy.

My experience is that Sierra’s are hard to beat, but I’ve never used either bullet.
I’ve had instances that either powder gave the better results.

I had a Ruger in .257Roberts that preferred IMR, My Custom Mauser with a ERShaw barrel prefers H4831.
My 24” bbl MkX .270 prefers H, my Remington M700 w22” bbl prefers neither, but MagPro or RL22!
Loadem up, and choot em
Then you’ll know!

I do know one thing! That buck HATED that 130gr Speer HotCor @3,200fps from 90yds. MagPro.
The coyote, too! 7C571E76-70A6-4D67-B982-4256A5AC7191.jpeg D93AEEBC-FF74-4C29-9271-9BF546CA55EF.jpeg

If I was going to pick between IMR or H in a 4831, it would be the H version, if for no other reason than in past 2 years I've had numerous opportunities to buy the H version and only one chance at the IMR version. Would matter down the road if I could get one and not the other. Would only want to do load development once. Both will likely work. I had pretty good results from H4831. One thing about H4831 is that once you get to max load, you are going to have a full case, right up to and maybe into compressed loads. I'm not sure that is a bad thing. Things started to tight up for me around 58 grains with a 130 grain bullet.

Standard primers.......no magnum's. I only used Rem LR and they all went bang.

For both bullets, are those going to stabilize in a 1:10 twist 270? I had pretty good results using 130 grain hornady Interlocks. But I'm not going for the distant horizon.

IMHO and experience, both versions of 4831 are awesome in the 270. I've not used either of the bullets you mentioned, but also my opinion is that the 270 is one of the least finicky cartridges to reload for. I believe you won't have any trouble finding a good accurate load with any combination of the components you listed.

Either powder should provide good performance in your .270. I have used either of the bullets you have on hand, but again should work fine. These days you sometimes have to make do with what you can find. 565F71F6-C56F-4D03-8070-ADF24500466B.jpeg
This guy met a 130 gr Hornady Interlock pushed by 56.0 gr of Alliant Power Pro 4000-MR in a Federal case with a Federal 210 primer. The .270 Win just works!

My old prefered load for my Sako Finnbear .270 Win:
57.0gr H4831
150gr Hornady FB Interlock
Fed std LR primer
Win cases
OAL: 3.275"
Mighty good load.
