Have been loading Berry's 165 grain copper plated bullets with Universal powder and a 5.4 gr. charge. Am going to start loading 155 gr. This is in 40 cal. Should my charge stay the same or increase ?

Lighter bullet generally requires more powder.

What are you using for reloading data???

It should give you at least a clue!!

At any rate, Hodgdon Longshot data says:
165 grain load
Starting load = 7.3
Max = 7.8

155 grain load
7.5 Start
9.3 Max

You are WAY under the suggested starting load with either bullet weight.

Powder charge

Using the Lee modern reloading .It says starting load for 165 gr. 40 cal is 5.1, not to exceed 5.6 . For the 155, starting load 5.7 not to exceed 6.2. What do you suggest.

rc posted data listing longshot powder not universal powder. At any rate using the data you posted, I would be more inclined to find another powder if I could. I dont like using powders where there is only a 1/2 grain difference between start load and max load. What if you have to seat the bullet deeper than what is listed? Are you using the same bullet, primer, and case that the load was tested with? You will have to take all of these factors into consideration when working up your load, and you may run into pressure problems fast. I cannot say for sure because I do not use universal powder in handgun loads. These are just my thoughts.
