Been a long time since I've bought powder for loading my Swedes. I'm almost out of the Accurate 3100 that is no longer available.
What would be a good replacement powder? I know 4831 is close in performance but I have no experience with 4831 or 4831SC. What does the knowledge base here have to recommend ?

TIA

I've had great results with IMR4831 also. The SC variety is H4831. They are quite a bit different IMO.

I have always used 4064 or Varget for my Swedes. Both have worked very well for me.

I took a white jug with about 4 pounds of A 3100 to the desert and started a camp fire with it. A friend gave it to me, the powder was poorly stored and looked rusty and smelled wrong. :(

Stay safe..

Swedish mauser...Is it me or is it anecdotal?

IMR 4831 or H4831 gave the best combination of velocity and accuracy at distance. The old staple, IMR/H4350 is still an outstanding powder in this cartridge, but the velocity was a little less. I did not have short cut 4831, but I think that is the best way to go. I really hate the Lincoln Log powders, such as IMR 4064 and IMR 4350 as they don't throw worth a hoot. I was surprised to find that IMR 3031, a pre WW2 Lincoln Log powder, is now a short cut. However, this powder is too fast for the Swede.

I found the IMR4831 has a more friendly recoil impulse as well.

I like IMR4064 even though it meters poorly. I use Lee scoops and a trickler.
I would be sad if it disappears.

k

Can you elaborate on the difference in recoil impulse please
The nearest I can come to describing it is. More like shooting a black powder rifle vs the sharper recoil of faster burning powders.
I've chronographed loads using it and imr4064. For nearly identical velocities it wasn't as noticable.
This was in 300WM with light bullets, 280AI, 6.5x55, and 22-250.
To be fair the 22-250 doesn't reality recoil with either so I run what gives the highest accurate velocity.

I also know the math says 4831 will recoil more than a powder that uses less mass for the same velocity. But science and human brains don't always agree.

Lot to lot variations. They are the same powder with different labels.

I understand that since Hodgdons has purchased distribution rights to Win powders, Hodgdons has stopped using the H414 name and gone with W760 alone.
That's a great high velocity powder for the 6.5x55, 260, 240wby, etc.

I'm on my last 5 lbs of MR3100. I bought it for the 25-06 and am now saving it for the M96's. Great powder in those.

IMR and H 4350 are tough to find, and likely will be for the forseeable future. I have used IMR 4350 extensively with 140 gr match bullets. Very fine powder in this cartridge.

With 123 grain bullets, I found IMR 4064 to edge it out slightly.

Another I would definately consider is H414 or W760. This has been somewhat more available lately.
