What would be a good powder to use for both .45 acp and 9x19? Maybe the 'best' for one is only marginal in the other so I'm looking for something that will perform well in both even though there might be something better for one.

Preferably not Hodgdon brand. Nothing against it but less chance of screwing something up if the containers for pistol and rifle powder are as dissimilar as possible.

FMJ 115 gr for 9mm and 230 gr for .45 probably if that makes a difference.

Not a problem. How about Winchester 231? It's same exact powder Hodgdon puts in the HP-38 container for less. ;)

FMJ 115 gr for 9mm and 230 gr for .45
My reference loads for 9mm and 45ACP that fed/chambered well in most pistols with good accuracy:

9mm 115 gr FMJ - 4.8 gr W231 at 1.125"-1.135" OAL (.375" taper crimp)
45ACP 230 gr FMJ - 5.0 gr W231 at 1.250"-1.260" OAL (.470"-.471" taper crimp depending on the barrel chamber)

I have used Alliant Bullseye in both 9mm and 45ACP with good accuracy but it produced snappier recoil in 9mm and burned not as clean as W231.

+1 for Promo. As Alliant indicates on their website, I use Red Dot load data by weight and reference the 2004 Alliant load data.

AA #2, AA #5

Bullseye, Unique

Zip, True Blue

N330, N340

Among others

I used either W-231 & AA #5, depending on power level, in both for years.

Winchester WSF. Excellent powder and clean burning. I use WST but load data for that in 9mm may be iffy.

WSF again,AA#5,Win 231,Power Pistol,N320,N330,N340 to name a few again.Sillhouette if you use stronger loads.

Unique is all I use for both.
And almost every other handgun caliber I load.

It's fine in .45 ACP, and more finer in high pressure calibers like the 9mm.

Thats why it is so "Unique".

+1 for AA #2. Haven't used it in 9mm (cause I don't own one) but it's my go to for .45 ACP, .38 Spl, and .45 LC.

I've got my own WST load data for 9mm. I decided to work up loads with it because it's such a good powder. It's now my go-to powder for both .45ACP and 9mm, just like the OP wants. :)

231 will also do the trick, but WST is cleaner and I would say a touch more accurate.

I also use WST on 45 auto and 9mm. I have seen load data for WST and 9mm in the new Hornady manual. Other than that I haven't seen much.

+1 I use Unique for most of my "normal" pistol loads, including 45 ACP and 9mm.

Check out www.ramshot.com and look at data for ZIP and Silhouette. If you want full velocity Silhouette will get it done in 9mm and in .45 ACP I use it with jacketed bullets to get factory load velocity or better. ;)

Lots of good choices, I use only one powder for the 4 calibers I reload - Win 231/HP-38. Keeps my powder inventory simple and eliminates the possibility of grabbing the wrong powder for a given caliber.

I started using WSL when it first came out and had to figure out the data on my own. When it was discontinued I switched to WST and had to do most of that again. There is more WST data now but still not much. I use it in .44 mag, 9mm, 38/.357 mag and .45 ACP.

A really pleasant powder to use and the cleanest burning powder I've ever used. They will probably discontinue it now.

look at data for ZIP and Silhouette

Zip seems to be a "kissing cousin" to W-231, both in looks and performance.

Same goes for Competition and WST. The very little difference in performance in my load tests could be no more than lot differences.

I just finally bought some Silhouette, and have only tried one thing with it.

Bullseye in my .45 and my 9X18. All I've used in the Mak is Bullseye so I don't have anything to compare it with. It works well and I have plenty of powder so I'll leave it there for awhile. The only other powder I've used in the .45 is Blue Dot and I couldn't get it to shoot as well as Bullseye.
