This will seem like a dumb question...but here goes.

I've always loaded my cases directly from my scale's pan. Normally, goes without incident...maybe one screw up spill out of 100 rounds.

Anyway...never used a funnel.

Well I'm going to start loading some shells with a smaller neck, and am starting to think the funnel might help.

Was thinking about the Lyman powder funnel (combo pan/funnel).

I'm guessing these things work not by going inside the case, but by just keeping a seal of the rim to the funnel.

Are they fairly bullet proof, or do you get grains of powder spilling when you remove the funnels (Not just the lyman...anything?)

the one I use has a flared bottom tube that goes over different cases. I think its a Lee, but I'm not sure.

I find the flared bottom tube is very easy to put on top of any cases you're working with, no matter small or large necks.

1. You're right - they don't go inside the case. They fit over the case mouth and are tapered inside so they'll fit and form a pretty good seal on just about any case from .17 to .45 caliber. I suppose they would work on .50 caliber too, but I'm not sure.
2. Yes, they are quite "bullet proof" as you put it. You seldom spill a kernel, flake, or ball of powder while using one. Unless, you get in a hurry while dumping large charges of powder in magnum rifle cases and not allowing enough time for the powder to "funnel" into a case before moving the funnel. I've done that - it makes a heck of a mess.

I think you'll find a powder funnel saves you a lot of time. Dumping charges of powder into cases directly from your powder scale pan sounds like a slow process to me. And you say you only spill powder about once every hundred charges? You must have steadier hands and more patience than I.:)

RCBS makes (or Sells) one for a couple of dollars. I bought two 20 years ago and am still using the first one. The other one is still in the loading bench drawer. It's just a green plastic funnel made to go over the outside (internal funnel) of the case mouth. Will fit everything up to and including .50 calibre.

Lyman Combo Pan/Funnel

I have and use one of the Lyman combination powder pan & funnels and am pleased with the way it works.
I use an electronic powder scale/dispenser. The dispenser measures the powder into the pan. I just pick up the pan, place it over the mouth of the case and dump the load into the case. Place the pan back on the scale and push the dispense button. The next load is measured out while I seat the bullet on the charged case.
I only load 22-caliber rifle and have had no problems with spilled powder. It will work with up to 45 caliber.

Thanks... I ordered the combo. Figured it's cheap...see how well it works.

have seen a number of people who suggested gluing a coin to the bottom of it because it's kinda tippy.

Side note-I use two different funnels. My RCBS is round and rolls all over the place, my LEE has flat sides! I use my Lee. Simple, but effective.
