Stopped at a small outta the way archery/gun shop in a small town about 50 miles from home. Old guy that owns it is semi-retired and is only open two days a week. Bought 8000 primers from him about a month or so ago, not because I needed them, but because he had them in stock at pre-frenzy prices. Stopped back to see what else he had and when I asked him about W231, he said "yeah, I think I got some left.......". This is what he came out with. Cans were sealed, just ain't seen any like this in a while. They were marked $16.95! I took the last two he had!

I think the can is worth more than the powder content! :D

Can I buy/trade one of the cans? (if shipping, just the can) I would trade SP/LP primers for them to start if you were local ... :D

I spent all day yesterday at a big gun related auction.
In the powder section there were dozens of metal WW cans, all still unopened.
The coolest was the scores of unopened 1# Dupont cans!
I walked out at the end of a long day not spending a nickle.
The bids on powder, brass, bullets, primers was, well. all I can say is a lot of those guys went berserk!
There were quite a few die sets I wanted, before I got a bid in they were up over what I could buy them off the shelf at one of the local gun shops.
It was just too much, never saw anything as nutty as what went on there.
A few of us guys just stood around watching the show with our jaws dropping at the idiocy.

That is super cool! To think that there is still some of the old stuff around, and then for it to be so inexpensive.
I picked up some bullets and primers from a shop like that a little while back, and the bullets were the old Speer label and the primers were in the boxes from the 80's. And just a few weeks ago I bought some Hot cores that were also from the 80's, and from a another old shop in town. There still some old back stock that's been forgotten about in these old shops.

I have an old Winchester powder can like that that has rusted on the outside so I made a good use for it. I mixed half and half automatic transmission fluid and acetone to use as penetrating oil. It unstuck a 302 engine and I found for stuff rusted together it works better than anything you can buy. Definitely not on topic but I happened to think about it and it should be a great help if you need some help with something stuck by rust.

I'm still using Unique I bought in 1973, and I have an unopened one from the 1950's... I also have cans of DuPont IMR4895 and some others.

Darn, the cans are not for sale!

Congrats on the find! :D
bds, I have no clue as to where you are located. I have a few old cans including a Winchester 231 can.

Hey, at $15 for the 231 I was even cheaper. :)

The cans are not as minty and the 231 feels light. Normally when I open a can I mark it with the date but not this one. Anyway, if you want the can it's yours for the asking. I'll just dump whatever powder is in it. Not as minty as the posted can but at free it is very reasonably priced. :)

This thread got me rummaging through old stuff I had squirreled away years ago. On the bright side I found 4 newer 1 Lb plastic jugs, unopened, of AA 2520. Nice surprise there.

I guess my old DuPont IMR cans will go along nicely with my Winchester cans as well.......

Wish I had kept my 4 and 8 pound fiberboard Unique containers

Heh- there's a lot of us who never thought there could be any reason to save those old powder cans when they got emptied.
Up till the late 60's I had built up a big collection of old Peters shotgun shell boxes, just thought they were neat for some reason. Then when making a move decided to chuck them all. Oh well.

I threw away the bag my first 700X came in. The4 700X I have now is a 5 lb metal can. I think I still have a metal 296 can and a 3lb W231 metal can, as well as some IMR metal cans.

Some of those cans are wanted by collectors because they're old? Nice, I still have several unopened ones on the shelves I bought new, I'm feeling old myself about now :(

I had a few cans just like that a while back, but gave them to a buddy! I think I still have on old metal can that I though was awesome, gimme a couple days to take a picture!

I have a few Winchester cans too.. And I have some IMR cans I bought in the 70s and 80s.4198- 4227. 3031. And they still have powder in them..
