Powerful full length bull pups?

Couldn't I just buy the "chassis" of the Desert Tactical without the barrel, then have the freedom GW folks fix their barrel on? No need to buy stuff just to throw it away or sell it, is there?
I don't see why not. The one concern that I have is the bbl quality. I'm not saying it is bad, I just don't know...and a LRPR with a poor quality bbl is pretty pointless. If I wanted a custom chambering, I would see what Krieger could come up with (but you will still need the bolt and bbl extension).

Could one take the 'covert' chassis (with the shorter rails), and have Freedom GW put a 7 WSM bbl on it, I wonder? The covert is made for .308 Win, so as for mag length and action length, it should work, but the bolt would need to be swapped out (for the .300 Win Mag sized one).
I don't think (but then again I don't know for sure) that the covert has a different action. Looks to me like the only difference is the shorter chassis. I would call DTA to be sure, but I think you are GTG.

Maverick, I'm fired up! I just talked with Bobby of Freedom Gun Works - great guy and took a lot of time explaining everything to me!

They build them from scratch, from chassis's on hand, so no need to buy a barrel you don't need. $2,560 for the chassis & bbl extension, and $1,500 for the bbl and gunsmithing & shipping, give or take, depending on your choice of bbl options.

He says that his 7 WSM shoots into "the teens", and he's won a 1K yard match with it. Sounds like a real straight shooter too. I mean, honest.

They will do any caliber and twist rate you want. So, planning now to thin the herd greatly and raise cash to obtain one with a 28" bbl in 7 WSM, .280 Rem, 6.5-284 Norma, or 6.5-'06 A square, with the melonite bbl coating ($100) and spiral fluting on the bbl ($160). He says the melonite coating will at least DOUBLE the barrel life, so it's a steal at $100 for a barrel burning caliber. PM for more info. This is gonna be my long range gun I've been thinking of for years, I think. :)

Oh, and they have to use the .300 win mag bolt and magazine for the 7 WSM, due to bolt face size, but he assures me that it feeds flawlessly from the longer mag.

On bbl quality, I believe that they guarantee 0.5 MOA - but I forgot to ask him who he has do their barrels for them.

Get a load of this - this is Bobby:

Wow!!! I'm feeling a little froggy meself; I don't have a dedicated long rang rig per se, but after looking at that, and what Dr. Tad has found for us, something in a nice 6mm remmy or say a 270 or 7mm wsm is sounding better all the time...

Sounds like I may have found my next bbl...still undecided on the cartridge, but from the start I determined the next one would be a 6.5mm or 7mm with a magnum case (to fit the .300WM bolt). That 7mmWSM may be the ticket as it will be less of a bbl burner...might even have to revise my thoughts on the whizzums.

Thanks for the information, Doc. Tad! xyxthumbs.gif

I read somewhere that the ATF doesn't like electronic triggers on semi-autos because it's very easy to convert to full auto. It would involve just making a new circuit board. On a bolt action I don't think it would fall under the "easily convertible" category.
