I’m not interested so much in tactical/SD practice habits here, I’m more interested in woods carry type practice. I do 95% of my hand gun shooting with my 6” SA revolver. I subscribe to the thought process of “I’d rather be really good with 1 gun, than decent with several.” I am fortunate to be able to walk out my front door and shoot all I want. I generally shoot 2-3 times/week, and shoot 20 - 40 rounds/session. My typical session is something like:

5 rounds at 15yds at paper to get warmed up.

10-15 rounds at 25 yards at paper targets I print out with a 4” colored circle.

Then I shoot as much or as little as I want at paper/steel/cans/clays/balloons/etc. out to 50+ yards.

We deal with coyotes, hogs, mountain lions, bobcats, raccoons, etc, so my practice revolves around being able to take care of any of those if needed in the woods on my land. A pic of your woods revolver is welcomed as well.

Keith it sounds like your routine is ideal for your needs. I lean more towards defensive carry considerations with some woods carry mixed in so my focus is shorter distances with 15-25 yards thrown in to reinforce the basics of marksmanship. I enyy (in a good way) your ability to bust some caps a few times a week.

One of these is always with me. All are chambered for the 45 ACP. I just use stumps and such at various ranges for “targets of opportunity”.

If I could walk out of my house door and shoot, I'd practice fast point shooting from the holster. If I did that where I live right now, I'd get arrested. :uhoh:

“I’d rather be really good with 1 gun, and decent with several others".

That's more my mode of thinking. :)

I usually go to the indoor range once a week and shoot at 25 yards (and faster at 10-15 yards). But as I just found that an old shooting area in National Forest has reopened to firearms use, I can go there more often for short point shooting at stumps, and longer range work at 100 yards or more.

My two woods guns

Top: A .44 Mag SBH, Bisley conversion, with extra tall front sight an Bowen rear target. Power Custom free spin pawl, and Hogue micarta grip panels.

Bottom: A .41 Mag BH, with the left over parts from the SBH above (grip frame, hammer, and trigger). Also Hogue micarta grip panels. Power Custom free spin pawl, and Wolff reduced hammer spring. Also stainless steel ejector rod housing and base pin. Still waiting for the Bowen target rear sight for this one.

Both resting on a Simply Rugged Cattleman crossdraw holster. Matching belt is incoming.

I'm very comfortable with the .41 Mag BH, and at least competent with the .44.

Nice revolvers, Armored Farmer. Now what do you do to stay sharp with them?
I have been shooting quite a bit of paper lately.
Another thing that seems to help is the fact that my favorite handguns are single actions in 4 5/8 or 4 3/4 inch barrel lengths. My single six, .357 blackhawk, and my .45c SAA, my .44 cap n ball all fit in the same belt/holster rig.
The common barrel lengths are not coincidence. I like the feel and balance. The lack of belt loops on this rig was purely accidental because it was made for a cap n ball revolver, but it has been a good thing. This is a very versatile rig for me. I can use it with four guns in different calibers.

Sometimes I make it to the range once a week in winter or every other week. Often in summer, home improvement projects need to get accomplished when they can, which means I don't get to shoot.

So my shooting sessions tend to be long and last between 200-400 rounds. When I shoot indoors, there is only one range within reasonable driving distance. When shooting outdoors, it tends to be in places like this.

My favorite woods revolver right now.
