Please move to Firearms Research please. Sorry. I have two model 70 Winchester's, 25-06 and 375 H&H Super Express, and I was wondering how I can tell if they are pre or post 64's? The serial no's start with a G and are G96xxx and G51xxx.

I looked for info and it was a little confuseing. It said that post 64's SN would start with a G, and i have forgot what the number's started at, but it was high. So the low number's beside the letter G had me wondering. I want be dissapointed either way as they are both beautiful. And yes I are an Idiot.

You have post-64's.

Oldguns.net will return 1948 on one, and 1946 on the other if you leave the G off.

But the 25-06 was not introduced as a commercial caliber until 1969 by Remington, and wasn't chambered by Winchester until well after that.

I am not aware of any serial number list for post-64 Winchesters, as the ATF took all the factory records when Winchester Repeating Arms went out of business in 1989.

Well, there is this, but I am not sure how accurate it is.

They started using the G in 1968. With 5 digit numbers I'm betting late 60's or early 70's. I've never found a reliable online source for figuring out post-64's, but there are some published books that will have semi-reliable dates. Maybe someone with a book will see this and look it up.
