I have a chance at a pre-ban Hungarian AK with under-folder. Blonde wood, sling and one mag. No box. No bayonet. Supposedly in unfired condition (who knows?).

How are the original Hungarian AKs? (Not the post-ban, with American fire control components.) How is it compared to a Polytech pre-ban AK?

What is a reasonable price for this?

Thanks,
Steve

I haven't owned a polytech, but the FEG AKs (Hungarians) are some of the nicest I've seen.

I've owned a couple of the milled receiver Bulgarian rifles and they're not even in the same class.

A REASONABLE price is probably about $350. In today's market, it might bring twice that easily.

I sold off the Chinese and Maadi AK's I had just before the ban in Kali in 2000. I kept 2 Hungarian and 2 Yugo
s , each one a fixed and an underfolder. The Yugo's have a positive bolt hold open feature, and are constructed of much heavier guage metal with more rivets and welds and have a Yugo sight mounting system. The Hungarians are very light but very well made and fitted. Both are about egual in accuracy(4-5" at 100yards benched) , and neither is full auto so I don't know about that(but strongly suspect the Yugo ones would hold up better to rock and roll). My favorite is the Hungarian under folder as it weighs 6.5 lbs (unloaded) and pokes around corners well, an excellent CQB choice IMHO.. Of course it has been stone reliable in 1500 rnds.;) John: do you mean the Bulgarian Milled ones are better fitted or worse? I never owned a milled Bulge, but on my exams I wish I did!:)

Gordon,

How well do the folding stocks hold up on the Hungarians? I looked at a Polytech pre-ban that had an underfolder and it had a lot of play in it.

I would assume the Hungarian would be better.

Thanks again,
Steve

A REASONABLE price is probably about $350. In today's market, it might bring twice that easily.

If you can get a preban Hungarian AKM folder for $700 you better jump on it, even better if you can get it for $350. Typically these are bringing about $1100. Just make sure the importer marking on it is Kassnar (preban) and not KBI (postban).

I found a couple of short references to the Hungarian pre-ban in other places. Seems some have reported trigger slap in them. Has anyone here found that? I also saw prices around $1000.

SteveW13,
I have a Hungarian SA-85M preban folder and a Hungarian SA-85M Post ban thumbhole that I converted to pistolgrip configuration, with the appropriate number of US parts. Neither one has/had any form of trigger slap. The folder has the sweetest stock trigger pull of ANY AK type rifle I have ever felt. Pricing will be in the $1000-$1200 range. They imported less of the fixed stock versions than the folders, which command a slight premium.

Well, this is a non-issue, now. I talked to the dealer (they hadn't priced it, yet the other day). They want $1800!!! for it!!! Good grief. And this is with NO box and ONE mag.

This same dealer also wants $2000 for an unfired pre-ban SP1 Colt CAR-15. Guess they will have them for a while.

Steve

What do you think a Pre-Ban Hungarian Underfolder AK is worth?
I said it above, I'd think it was in the $1,200 range. The SA-85M's that I saw were all thumbhole. We are talking a pre-Sep1994 that was configured as a folder with or without US parts prior to the ban. That's a rare gun and is going to fetch that kind of money.

My two Kassnar imports have the slash cut barrel too! No bayonet lug or cleaning rod. The Yugo's have all three and (expired) 'nite sites''.

Gordon,
My preban folder has a bayonet lug, cleaning rod and retainer on the front sight, It even came with the bayonet. The postban KBI imported Hungarians have the bayonet lugs removed from the gas block and the cleaning rod retainer from the front sight. The cleaning rod was included but shipped loose.

As I mentioned before a preban SA-85M will have Kassnar as the importer and will have a bayonet lug, removable slant brake/threaded muzzle and a cleaning rod. Postban will have KBI as the importer and a missing bayonet lug from the gas block, missing cleaning rod retainer ion the front sight and no threads on the muzzle or slant brake. If yours are marked Kassnar, I wonder what happened to the bayonet lug. Is the slant type brake removable on your SA-85M?

I don't know of the slant brake is removeable BUT it's there. cLEANING ROD AND BAYONET LUG REMOVED. The AK's I bought from a gunstore which went under in 94 were made right before or in inventory when ban hit . Some of the other Norincos and Maadi's I sold had transvestiite features also. The Mitchell Yugo's I have came with documentation letters , the two Kassnars did.nt and I think they removed the lug inn an attempt to placate ATF if they were in stores after 94.
