I summer carry a S&W 642 with a lock and have put roughly 700 rounds through it of range and SD ammo. No issue. As I said, I trust it. To each their own.

If it is true that the lock failure is due to either tampering with the gun or the shock of recoil from larger calibers then our "little" 642s should be just fine firing 38 Special, even +P. I would only run the +P for SD ammo and a little at the range for testing accuracy of your SD ammo. Otherwise non-+P FMJ at the range. I won't run bare lead bullets in mine as it leaves deposits and FMJ does not really cost much more.
