Precision .22 rimfires with iron sights

I have not tried Redfield sights. I called and asked if Tech Sights made sights for the 336, but they do not so I went with Ranger Point. Have you tried the different aperture inserts? I want to but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Also I see you graduated from my Alma Mater about 10 years after me. No one snatches defeat from the jaws of victory quite like the pack. At least they're putting out some good research.

And you're right about the pack. Nothing like beating a top 5 team and then turning around and losing to a nobody. We can do it every year no matter who the coach is or what the sport is! haha

Mentions of high quality .22's with iron sights brings to mind my long ago days when shooting on my university's rifle team. Team members had the choice of using rifles owned by the university, or our own equipment. I owned and used this Hammerli-Tanner free style rifle, which I continued to compete with on a military team. The Swiss made Hammerli rifles and pistols were considered the Rolls Royces of Olympic grade target shooting back in those days. I can no longer shoot iron sights, so this rifle now enjoys a well earned retirement in my gun rack, along with a few other long time favorite target rifles. Did a quick check of a few kinds of Eley this afternoon at 25 yds. Was losing light fast, but the Tenex did pretty well. Match was similar but with one flier that was likely me. Shot the CCI last and it didn't do quite as well as last time, but probably the light (or the shooter, lol)

Hoping to stretch it out to 50 yds Sunday.

A buddy was looking through his stash and gave me a box and a half of UM-1, and a sealed box of Rem Match Extra by Eley. I'm curious to see how they do.
The weather hasn't cooperated to stretch the distance out yet, but hopefully it will soon.

That UM1 was good stuff. I shot benchrest with a guy that would use nothing else. He shot good scores with it. I say was because that ammo is probably well over ten years old. If the lube has dried up and turned white, I wouldn't expect it to do all that well.

Later Ultra Match came in an orange box. Even it has been discontinued for several years.

The open box of UM1 looks good, so hopefully the sealed box is as well. I'm fairly certain this lot is over 20 years old at this point, He's pretty sure he bought it in the late 90's early 2000's.
The lube on the Rem/Eley has turned a bit chalky white, so it's a bit suspect, but I'm still going to see how it does lol.

It’s been a number of decades since I competed with them in ROTC but I do still play with 3 position rifles here at the house from time to time. I have one friend that really enjoys it, like the good old days but it’s generally surprising to people that have never used such equipment how much more accurate they can shoot one than their scoped .22 they came to play with.

I recently acquired a Kimber 82 Govt. It came with precision irons but I also have an older Leupold BR-24X. I will soon be pulling out the action and sanding the stock to clean-up razor knife marks on the stock from an individual with a ham handed approach to opening the plastic wrap for inventory purposes. I'll also be soaking the bolt to get all the dried preservative out. It is, new and unfired.

This is a bit of a redux for me as I had a different one about 25 years or so ago set-up for BR-50 competition. That one had a massaged trigger that broke at 4 ounces, hopefully I can get this one there, too. That rifle was capable of phenomenal groups with Eley Tenex and Lapua Match ammo.

I'm not expecting to compete with it, I just appreciate very accurate rifles.

Here are a couple more veterans from the days when I could shoot iron sights in competition: At top is a Remington M-37 rebuilt to International configuration by Roy Dunlap. Bottom is a Winchester M-52C, which was one of my first serious target rifles. Rear sights on both are Redfield Internationals, fronts are Redfield Olympics, which I preferred over their International fronts.
