I have an M&P 9mm and also a stainless steel revolver. During the summer I sweat battery acid. This results in rust on the M&P sights and frame and sights on the revolver. I normally clean them after each range visit, but my sweat is so powerful, I still get rust.

Anyone have secrets for preventing rust? I'm thinking a more permanent solution. Maybe clean alumihyde paint or black alumihyde for the sights. Has anyone tried this or another solution?

Oil just doesn't seem to stand up long enough.

Oil is no going to work.

Use R.I.G. Grease, and wipe them down with a rig-rag every time you handle them.

I have used it 50 years, and never had a gun rust, ever.

On the other hand, I have known one or two guys in my life whose sweat will rust the chrome off a Trailer Hitch ball while you are watching it do it.

Wash your hands more often, and carry wet wipes for use at the range.

I did an unscientific rust test using many products including Rem Oil and Johnson paste wax. The product that stood head and shoulders above all I tested was Eezox.

Find a new holster with a sweat shield. Cuz you don't want your battery acid sweat on the gun and you don't want any kind of gun oil rubbing off onto your skin. I can't stand having the rear sight gouging me all day either. Is this an IWB holster?

I too use Rig grease, good stuff. I especially use it on my long guns and handguns that don't get used very often and sit for long periods of time in the safe, never had a rust issue. For guns that get regular use, I use Eezox. At the range I keep a Eezox rag handy, never had any rust or corrosion issues with this either.

Have used RIG Gun Grease for many years. Stays on whereever you put it on and gives great protection from rust.

I used to carry an old Kimber, and even though I coated it with Rem Oil, the barrel would always start to rust fairly quickly. I got tired of it rusting, so I switched to Froglube paste instead, and I never had that problem again. The paste stayed on the gun and didn't run off, so I didn't have to re-apply it anywhere near as often.

Now I use Froglube as my primary lubricant and preservative and it works great. The problems people have with it come from using too much of it: If you glob it in your gun it won't run out like liquid oil will, so you're going to have issues. But if you use it the way it's supposed to be used, it works great.

Eezox (use rubber gloves) or CorrosionX is supposed to prevent rust. Might try Ren. Wax too.

Eezox has pretty specific user directions for max effect...

Bite the bullet, and get it coated, and forget about smearing grease and oil over it. I like Black T, but most coatings will give lifetime protection.

Me too. Fun, aint it?

Up until I found hard chrome and tennifer nothing else worked. Everything I carried rusted. So far, only tennifer has been 100%.

Ditch the leather holsters too. Kydex, with a decent sweat shield, is the way to go, especially if you dont want to refinish, or carry a Glock. Its impervious to sweat. No more sweat soaked and constantly wet leather holsters for your gun to percolate in. Its not 100%, but its in the 90's for any metal not exposed.

Ive used Eezox on some things, with pretty good success, as long as they werent on my body.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Gives me a number of things to try.

Rig works well.

I also like any good silicone impregnated cloth. Birchwood Casey, G96, and others make them. Just wipe the heck out of everything before and after use. Less messy than grease.

You could have the pistol treated with a nickel, titanium, or boron finish. However, this gets expensive quick as doing it right often means a detail strip, a lot of time spent removing any factory coatings, and a long process of QC, all that drive the price up. Probably the best known brand for this is Robar.

With that said, I use Corrosion-X on many very rust prone metals and it provides months of protection with a single application. Many of these metals are much more prone to rust than the metals on firearms are. An example would be White #2 steel, which will start rusting within a few minutes of becoming wet, and within a few hours will begin to pit.

There are a few other products that are as well-regarded as Corrosion-X, each with their own individual advantages. Compared to traditional protectants such as Rem Oil or petrol-based grease, these products make a substantial gain in corrosion protection, and they do a much better job in bonding and then staying attached to the metal in a greater concentration, allowing substantially longer durations of rust protection, and better protection in harsh environments. I think there are a few other products that give better protection than Corrosion-X in saltwater environments, but a major reason I personally prefer Corrosion-X is because it is non-toxic, so I use it on my best kitchen knives that are made from very rust prone steels.

Or you can just have your guns hard chromed, which is beneficial to the gun in many other ways (such as stopping wear in the barrel and in moving parts). BreakFree CLP also has worked as a rust inhibitor in salt spray tests, and it has Teflon. You do have to shake it, and it works best if you let it set.

WD-40 Corrosion Protection (NOT regular WD-40) has excellent capabilities. I recommend using only on the outisde, because it does thicken over time.
