Howdy, I've got a Sig P226 that I normally carry IWB daily. In the past I've had issues with the grip screws showing a bit of rust if I didn't oil the gun once a week or so. Today I pulled it out of the holster and there is a big splotch of rust on the trigger. Right where my finger would touch it while firing. The last time I oiled it was Tuesday before last(cleaned and oiled after going to the range).
It is possible that I didn't wipe down the trigger during the last cleaning.

What do you think?
Should my Sig just up and rust so easy?

I understand it's a humid enviroment inside my pants(no I don't pee myself) but come on, almost weekly oiling and it still rusts this easy??
Is there something I can do to inhibit the rust?

It only seems to affect the trigger and screws as they are a different material than the rest of the gun. Except the internals look like the same material but don't show signs of rust.
I was thinking once I get the rust off I could put a little clear nail polish on the screws to protect them but I'm leery about doing that to the trigger. Ideas?

1. Sweat contains salt.
2. Salt & moisture will promote rust very quickly on any blued weapon.

3. Oil rubs off easily with IWB carry.

4. Use Johnsons Paste Floor Wax on the gun and it will certainly help. But not if you don't wipe it down more often then "once a week or so."

5. Wipe it down every day when it comes out of the holster at the end of the day.

Everyone I know who carries daily wipes their guns down daily. It's the only proven way to prevent rust. As mentioned oil rubs off and evaporates easily, and it's not just sweat. The oils and fats our skin naturally secretes tend to be very corrosive since they usually have a lot of salt in them.

My neighbor used to be a county sheriff's deputy. He would oil down his sidearm everyday when he got home and took it off so it would be ready to strap on again the next day. He once told me that not doing that would be like forgetting to take his pants off before going to bed.

...

Also, some peoples sweat is more conducive for making rust than others, but that is just human, so as suggested wipe your gun daily, especially trigger and muzzle area, if holster has open end.

You might try and find some EEZOX, synthetic lube (light cleaner as well) but this stuff is great for protection of guns from rust.. Directions on can.

Well worth the small investment..

It's been my CCW for going on two years with weekly wipe downs and I've never had anything but the occasional bit of rust on a grip screw. Until yesterday.

I get the point about the daily wipe downs, suppose I've been neglecting my Sig(she eats well). I'll work the daily wipe down into my bedtime routine and if the rust comes back look into something like EEZOX.

Don't forget inside the barrel too.

Mosture likes to collect in there, and before you know it, you got a rust spot inside the muzzle!

My 228 went from being rust-prone to surviving just fine on weekly (or less!) wipedowns with a rag drizzled with CorrosionX.

$0.02,
Robert

(I did swap for stainless grip screws, however...)

Hogue also makes stainless steel hex grip screws for the Sig line of pistols. I use them on all my Sigs.

I also like to use Tuf-Glide on my Sigs to keep them rust resistant. I draw my pistol from the holster every day after work, then do a quick rub down with a Tuf-Cloth. I rarely get rust on my Sigs if I do this.

Thanks for the tips - never thought about replacing the grip screws.

I gotta admit working in the nightly rub down hasn't gone well, if at all.
Seeing as how I've never gotten rust anywhere but the grip screws and just recently the trigger, maybe replacing the grip screws and using something anti-rust will prevent it from happening again. Then I can go back to my weekly(or so) wipe downs :)
