No, you are not looking at spending that much unless you just have money to burn. People ask whatever they want, notice there are no bids, and I doubt there will be. It's a nice enough gun in excellent condition but in the most common caliber, and the wood is nothing special.
You can find decent Browning Safari's or FN Supremes in the $6-800 range if you just look for a while, for the price of that auction you can find a nice high grade Browning.
My price comment was for the $1700 one at Gunbroker, by the way. The one pictured in the thread here appears to be in better condition and has better wood. Notice the auction gun has some blue going purple on the top and sort of a dull look, and what appears to be some checkering/scrapes of the finish.
Now remember I can't see the actual firearm, so I'm going by the photos. But this one looks like better than average wood, a decent amount of fiddleback and pattern in the grain. You'd need to add some more closeups of both sides of the stock and the metalwork before you put it up for sale though.
Assuming the metal is in as good a condition as the wood appears, and it hasn't been refinished, this would go at the high end, my guess is somewhere around $800+-. If you started it on Gunbroker etc. at $800, with no reserve, my feeling is it would actually sell for $8-900. Of course you might get lucky and find two bidders who really want one right now (because hunting season is coming up)
I'll try to get some more pictures tonight. I really want to see what kind of scope he has for it as well. The Redfield twist on mount has my curiosity piqued.
.45 Guy,
I found this thread about the Browning Safari you were maybe buying from your neighbor. This is exactly the rifle I'm looking for for a real nice hunter - any chance you might like to sell this one? I know guns come and go from collections so please contact me at [email protected] if you're interested. If not, no offense - never hurts to ask. Thanks.
If you could ask I'd be grateful. Any notion of what he was thinking for price? As this thread shows, something like 900 to a grand seems to be the ballpark for a nice one, lower if you're lucky and higher if you're impatient. Also, any notion of date the rifle was manufactured? Browning had some trouble with the stocks on ones they made starting in the late sixties (salt curing of the wood). Thanks for checking - much appreciated.
