I have a line a Colt Light Sporter AR-15. Less than 200 rounds through it. Not sure if it's in "pre-ban" config or not, but I think its "pre-ban". Regardless, is $800 a good price? It would come with one 5 round mag, at least one 10 round mag, and at least 2 (maybe 3) 30 round mags. No optics or sling AFAIK.

Pre-ban would just refer to the feature-set now. Any extra value over a similarly equiped new rifle would be colt collectability and I know next to nothing about that. Honestly, $800 sounds like a decent price if it's equiped the way you like and has "pre-ban" features. I wouldn't pay $800 if it had a muzzle brake or bare muzzle or a "pinned" non-collapsing stock. Actually, I'd build my own for less, but that isn't for everyone especially if you only want one.

I just bought a brand new Bushmaster M-4 type for $950. After the Clinton bill went away they sent it with all the pre-ban goodies!.. So for no optics, no idea how well the other guy took care of it? I would say "Buy a new Bushmaster!" Thats me, I dont collect guns to look at. ;)

Oh, I know the gun has been very well taken care of. It's been a safe queen since 1994, and only shot on one occasion with less than 200 rounds (probably clsoe to 120-150) at that time (mostly fired by me - maybe 30 of the rounds fired by the current owner). And, yes, I fully realize that "pre-ban" merely means a feature set but I was lazy while typing. I just don't remember that well what the "feature-set" happens to be.

Bayonet Lug (don't need)
Tele-stock
Flash Suppressor that comes off (Different Flash Suppressor/ Silencer?)

Thats the only visual differences I see! I would buy it if your happy with it! 1994? Does the Carry Handle come off? It will limit you optics choices later. Everybody is getting the flat tops, so it might be harder to find optics mounts later. Check GG&G's web site out. They supply alot of GOV. contracts on mounts.

Just food for thought... :)

He bought it becuase Clinton told him it was evil and he wasn't going to let some idiot tell him what he could/not buy.
Does the Carry Handle come off?
I'll have to ask, but I'm guessing that since he basically bought it to thumb his nose at Slick Willy that he probably doesn't know if it does or not. Besides, it's easy enough to replace the upper later on if I want.

It definately has a fixed stock, but I honestly can't remember if it has a brake or flash suppressor on the muzzel. I'm not worried about a bayo lug either way.

That's a decent price, for a Colt. Just adding the "Colt" adds about $200 to the gun for some reason.

If you ever want to swap uppers for a non Colt upper you would need a pin adapter for the 2 different sizes of holes between the upper and lower.

I may just go for it. The current owner knows me well enough he's willing to do a payment system. I figure $400 up front, and then $50/month.

Does the Colt use larger or smaller pins than everone else? What sort of options would I have for other Colt uppers (WRT calibers, barrel length and contour, flat top/carry handel, etc).

OK, got a bit more info on the rifle. It is "pre-ban" with a flash hider but a fixed stock, no bayo-lug. S/N is SL0005xx. Barrel is 16", lightweight contour.

Now, the seller just found a "Blue Book" price for this gun that put it at $1300-1500. I think the book is from the AWB days, as it cautions that modifying it to "pre-ban" config would be a felony. So I think that "value" is way too high.

Bottom line, is $800-850 still the right price, or is it really closer to those "blue book" prices.

If it is a green label Colt, it will have the large front take down pin, but standard hammer and trigger pins. If it is a newer blue label colt, it will have the standard front take down pin, but larger hammer and trigger pins.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything without the absense of a flash hider, collapsing stock, bayonet lug, and all other evil features - simply because the gubmint' doesn't like them. If they don't want me to have them, it means they are good for something.

$800 isn't bad for a Colt that you've shot, handled and inspected yourself. Colts do hold their value well, and just the name brings $200 extra.

Do this, go around the web, to auction sites and dealers, and see what a comparible Colt rifle new goes for. Same stock, barrel...etc. Don't worry about flash hiders and what not, they no longer bring a premium now that the ban is gone. Just find a very similar configured Colt. That will give you an idea. Beyond that, you'd have too look up the serial number or model # to find out if it is a model no longer made or from a previous generation that might bring it some more value.

Just got the latest Colt M4 (6920) NIB w/ mags sling etc $1155 OTD at the Lakeland show last week. HB, 6 position stock, bayo lug so pre-ban is not a sales tool any longer. Dealer said the price might go lower but I already had my plastic out. Joe

That's a great price for a used Colt, esp if you know that it's been treated well overall. I doubt that you would be able to find a used Bushmaster for that price.

Holy Cow! Pharmer!

Over here near the bay, I check gun shops and they are marked up a good 200%.

I got a Colt 6520 online for $950 NIB with the accessories.

Local store just down the road has it for $1,899. I kid you not. Usually the suncoastgunshows around here are just as bad, or pretty close.

I'll be at the Tampa one Oct.

DTOM, Tim's in Winter Haven is the shop. He had the 6520 for $100 less, I don't know if the prices are the same in the shop. I've not been in. I don't go to Suncoast shows only L R P C in Jan, Apr and Sep. Joe

For $800-850, I'd take it IF you like the configuration. Knowing the history is a bonus. For $900+, I'd spend some time at www.ar15.com then spend the $900 to build one from new (or near new) parts EXACTLY like you want and put the extra money toward mags and ammo. That assumes you want a shooting rifle that will get used. If you want to play collector and investor, then maybe the Colt is for you; it's a tricky game though and you don't get to take it out to play very often.
