I have a chance to pick up a Colt 1991A1 Govt Model, .45ACP, Stainless Steel for $800. I just want to check with people on here to see if this is a good price or not. The gun is brand new.

typically, the 1991A1 line is a beginner's gun.

if it's a new colt, the price is acceptable, if not a little high. my 2 cents, others may have other opinions. i'm not a dealer, just a gun nut in texas.

i just traded a 1991A1 commander length in stainless with guide rod and a trigger job for a full length 1911 "loaded" S.A. stainless gun with all the bells and whistles. i traded in a used pistol that i would have had to throw 3-500 at in order to get features i wanted (ambi safety for competition, beavertail, upgraded sights, etc.) i threw in $200 boot, and the dealer went for it at once.

i've done a couple of custom pistols altered by one competent gunsmith, and one not so competent gunsmith. it's kinda like putting $1500 chrome wheels on a used corolla. if i'd have chosen to modify the colt to the level the S.A. was already, it would have cost me a lot more than the $200 i shelled out. i traded a stainless gun and got a stainless gun. i let go of a used pistol and got a new one with a warranty and all the factory paperwork, and didn't have to go to the trouble and expense of making "upgrades".

if you're happy with stock grip safety, single side safe lever, and not so great sights, then you've got an option. shop around. sometimes competitors will have good deals, and in an economy like this, they're hawking wares for sure.

best of luck in your search.

I needed a 1911 for SASS and mine were all to "advanced" so got one new for $750.

Eight bills is about right for the stainless model, with the blued model costing fifty to seventy five bucks less.

Thanks everyone. I'm still mulling it over, and I might just go ahead and grab a XSE for about $150 more than the 1991.

Rick,

For what it's worth, my 1991A1 is among my most accurate 1911 style pistols and it's hard to judge whether my Kimber will (or won't) outshoot it.

Thanks Mike. Someone snapped up the 1991A1 that I was looking at, but one day I'm sure I will grab one.

However, that may have been a good thing. I ended up getting a lightly used Dan Wesson RZ-45 Heritage from my LGS (when I went in to get a Ruger SP-101 for CC, which I also purchased).

Here is a link to the thread about my purchase: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=582022

I think I did pretty well on my first 1911 ;)
