I looked at a Colt 1991A1 today that to me has a satin type finish. The slide says stainless on it, and appears to be gray gold in color. The gun is LNIB and price is $459. What can you tell me about the finish and asking price.

They were all bead blasted from the factory....no polished flats. 459.00 is great if it has the box, 2 mags, and paperwork......if not, its a decent price still.

1991a1

What is bead blasting, and is it more or less durable than the standard blueing. Can they be refinished further down the line with another type of finish.

Bead blasting is where the surface is sprayed with abrasive from an air gun to roughen it up. It's a surface texture, not a covering like bluing. Now I don't know anything about Colts so they may very well then finish the beadblasted gun with something else.

Bead blasted, otherwise unfinished, knives will rust faster due to the roughness.

The gun in question is most likely a Colt 1991 ORM. The ORM refers to old rollmarks that say "Colt M1991A1" in billboard-size lettering and "Stainless" in smaller letters on a second line.

The 1991A1 Stainless' frame and slide are made of stainless steel that is bead-blasted to achieve a matte surface texture and there is no additional covering or coating.

The flats of the frame and slide are brushed (lightly polished) on newer 1991 models.

$459 sounds reasonable for a LNIB 1991A1 ORM.

I purchased my Colt 1991A1 SS NIB back in March, 1996 for $469. #CV00XXX. The slide and frame appear to be bead blasted. Nice 1911. :)
It looks like the one gc70 posted.

Although I think the new rollmarks are more attractive than the old ones, the 1991A1 ORMs are appealing because they seem like a modern stainless rendition of the WWII parkerized guns.

thats a great platform gun for a custom job, even more so if you want it to say Colt on it

colt stainless

Lets say I buy this gun for the purpose of doing a custom job. I know some are saying buy it custom but that takes some of the fun out. Who do I turn to for a finish job. I would start there.

These days with DuraCoat, How many kinds of nickle NP3 etc.
Hard chroming, Robars in house finish roguard

AND The one I would look at have it "super bright stainless polished" like Colt used to offer when they made guns
NOTE PRIOR COLT STATEMENT was filled with sarcasm and jest. I actauly did see a factory new Colt 1911 3 years ago
