I was up at my gun shop filling out some paperowork for an order, then kicked the tires a bit and noticed a nice-looking 91/30. Refinished, very clean, etc., although that isnt much of a win-over feature for me when buying. The eye-catcher was that it was a 91/30, which I never had seen up there.

The price tag said "$159.99". I've seen M44s in there for 70-80 bucks, and this one is pretty much the first non-M44 Mosin I've seen up there. So, what would be a decent going price for a 91/30, exactly?

any thoughts?

Online you can get them for under $100. But unless you've got a C&R, you'll be paying FFL transfer fees and S&H's.

So I paid $110 for mine, but with the above buying offline would have been a bit more.

I guess some stores do sell 'em comparable to online prices, but I haven't seen any in my local area, and don't have the time nor desire to drive around or call to find out.

So having said that, from everything that I can find and have read, that price seems a bit much. Though I guess if it was in really really really good condition maybe....

Of course if you really want one, why not? Its still under $200.

That sounds a little steep. Around here the 91/30's have always been cheaper than the M44's. Like around $80-$90.

the local pawn shop has them for $100.

I passed on a nice M44 for $110 OTD-went back the next day to get it and it was gone:mad:

IMHO, too high.

Big 5 Sporting Goods sells them frequently for $89.99. That's what I paid for my #'s matching 1938 Tula.

There's no way to know without more info (aresenal, date, wood type and condition, counterboring, stamps, numbers, importer ID etc.). I would not pay that much for a counterbore or anything from Ishy in the 40's. I would pay that much for a rare year or a pre-war model from Tula. Or a nice one with an Aztec importer stamp.

I was just kicking the tires without much intention of buying anything, and could had cared less about looking at stamps, checking for pits, etc. etc. In retrospect, I wish I wasnt in such a hurry and actually checked it out for real, because I really do want a Mosin without getting the 'limited-time only Czar handpicked M44s' offered elsewhere around here.

overall, it looked nicely refinished inside and out, but that was probably done in attempt to grab your attention and not ask questions for all I know.

I'll probably give a better description whenever I go back up there. Thanks for the advice though. :)

I keep hearing about these $59.99 Mosins but have never seen one. I think that must have been five years ago.

Got my 1943 Izzy for $110 a few months ago, for pretty much for the exact same reasons as COMPNOR. Seriously I can't find them in stores and I'm not willing to screw around with shipping something and an FFL transfer. $110 is the best deal I saw at the show, and it came cleaned of all cosmo and with all the goodies.

Gander Mtn. has them for $125, but they are all force matched, counter-bored, and soaked in cosmo.

Last weekend at the (small) gun show I was at, $160 was the cheapest I saw Mosins. And that was for M44s and T53s.

So I say if she is in really good shape, and it comes with all the stuff, and you really want one, $160 don't sound so bad.

Ok, so $9.96 more than $59.99, but close enough. :) For that you will get an arsenal refinished rifle with all of the accessories (bayonet, pouches, sling, oiler bottle, tools). And yes, the pictures are representative - I ordered both the 91/30 and the M44 without the handpick option and both look almost exactly the way they do on the site. Not only that, but the bores are in very serviceable shape and all of the parts match.

The only caveat is that you need a C&R license or a very cheap FFL to do the transfer for you or you really aren't getting that much of a deal...if you figure a $30 transfer plus shipping, you're going well over $100. In that case, paying $120-130 in a shop and checking it out and walking home with it on the spot without the transfer hassle makes plenty of sense.

$99 locally here. And I'd rather pay a little more for a 91/30 I can inspect the bore/rifling condition on than a cheaper one that I can't.

yea, but...would a 'nice' one be worth 70 bucks more? I went back to look, and it wasnt anything special, from what you guys said. It appears to just be very cleaned out and re-finished.

I keep hearing about everyone who's mosins cost them 160 bucks. That is a scam. I can get them for under 100 dollars usually. Unless its a finnish m39 or other model for $160, it isn't a deal.

Ditto re Big 5 store in Arvada CO, off Kipling just north of I-70 but they jump up to $179.00 periodically, then back down again.

Their flyers (fliers?) are on line, so you can keep an eye on it and wait, paws forward, ears back, rump wiggling, tail flicking, then pounce.

They let me look over a couple of them from the back room, and I bought one in Good to Very Good antique condition. All SNs matched except bayonet, superb bore (must've been issued to an Officer who never fired it), got a complete field kit with it.

BRING A .30 BORESNAKE AND A FLASHLIGHT ALONG WITH YOU.

Funny, I keep hearing about people getting them for $70-80 but never seen that price in person only online.

2 months ago you could get 91/30's for $70 at gun shows, now they are asking $130.

Or you can get them for $50 online. $60-$70 for one that isn't counter bored.

I bought my mosin 91/1930 for $200 well 150, but with NY gay taxes and 1 box of ammo ($20)
but it was my first mosin and it is cool, some the conscript that owned it engraved his name on the bolt, floorplate, receiver, that is cool and it was very clean and had been refinshed very well.
again price is due to condition and model and also desire for said gun.
And good choice with the 91\1930 not the midget M44! long live the really long rifle!:)

Yes, they really are elegant-looking, especially with the bayonet fixed. The wood on mine was really nice and came up even prettier with a little buffing with a clean rag.

I have some issues with the extractor not riding over the cartridge rims in rapid operation, but that's fixable. However, I want to leave it pristine and unchanged.

I paid 125 for mine. I could have ordered one for less but tey vary greatly in quality. I so one I liked at the gun show and it was in very good shape so I paid a little more for it. It shoots GREAT. Its M44 brother matches it nicely. I got the 44 for around 90 bucks.

There would have to be something special about it for me to pay $160 for a 91/30. They sell them online for $70 after all. Hex receivers go for a few more bucks, but still under $100. So figure that $120 allows for shipping and a reasonable profit for the dealer.

64 cents, a pack of bubblegum and a bead necklace...

Seriously though, no more than $120 if you don't have a C&R or a good friend who's an FFL.
