People are mentioning "I get mine for $70 bucks"........

Some of us don't have a Gander mountain or place like that that sells them. Some of us have to buy online,at a show or from a gunstore......

And a typical one "decent one" at a show goes from $130 to $160.That's what gunshows are selling them for.

And there is no way around paying tax and the $10 background check.

So buy online from a wholeseller and roll the dice, buy on a auction site where at least you see pics,or from a gunstore you are still going to pay the background check, maybe tax or a transfer fee which for me my guy charges $25.

Personally I prefere to handpick or see a photo,$25 or $30 more to pay a transfer fee is not a fortune to do so:rolleyes:And I know one particular dealer at shows who I have bought several rifles from and he always has the better quallity condition ones so we now have a customer/seller relation,I like that.

2 years ago members razzed me for buying a K31 for $200,they were quick to point out theirs only cost them $120:rolleyes:,but it was a nice tiger stripish stock. Now you can barely get a beat up one for that much.

If you see one you like might as well pay a little extra,it's not like you are pissing your money away with nothing to show for it.

I bought my very first one today at a gunshow with all the goodies for $79.00.
They did charge tax, so it was $86 out the door. It's a 1938 Izhevsk. The wood is nice, with a couple of arsenal repairs and the only numbers that match are the receiver and bolt but it's a shooter, not a collector piece. Bore looks very nice and the crown is impeccable...Made me a happy camper :)

yes that should make you a happy customer:)

I did say typically though, and there are times a dealer may put them on sale and not try to markup as much as others but from what I have seen at shows recently most are about the same in price.

Sometimes at a show, you may run into a dealer that is very reasonable and he is the one that doesn't have to take all his guns back home with him.

Call me crazy, but I happen to like rolling the dice on the cheaper guns. It adds to the anticipation you feel while waiting for the brown truck. Besides, the worst case scenario isn't bad - you will almost certainly get a functional rifle in any case. The now-ubiquitous re-arsenaled Mosins will all meet a certain standard: they weren't just picked up out of the dirt somewhere.

Great thing about surplus guns is that they don't really depreciate (often the opposite) so with a bit of patience you can often unload them for about what you paid and only lose out on shipping and/or transfer. Since I avoid transfer fees as a C&R holder, I have no trouble selling off a Mosin I paid $70 for at cost or even slightly above, because all of the local milsurp dealers are at least $40 above that (if they even have any). Fortunately, none of the guns I have purchased sight unseen have failed to meet my expectations, so that hasn't been an issue.

I agree with you whole heartedly lionking. I payed 225 for my K31 but it one of the nicest I've seen. My Mosin 91/30 is also in super shape for 125. I would rather pay a little more and get something really nice than to pay less and get less. I bought a Enfield #4 mark 1 and the headspace is out of whack so its not even worth the "deal" I got on it.
