Primer Availability? None?

Anyone else having trouble finding small rifle and large pistol primers? Everywhere local is out with no idea when more are coming in... and all of the mail-order places I use are showing no stock.

Any idea what's going on? Seems to be all brands.

Anytime I go into town I buy some small rifle primers just to have some on hand. They are the only thing the store I buy reloading stuff from is constantly out of. Yesterday I was in there and they had two shotgun primers, one large rifle magnum primers, and two small rifle primers. Of course, it's rare that they are fully stocked in primers, I don't get what their problem is, they always have powder and 300 boxes of bullets.

They've been tight for awhile now, esp. small rifle match...I would assume production for the military accounts for the short supply. Powder Valley has LP in CCI, Fed, Win, maybe others in stock and at least CCI in SR.

Good folks to deal with, the website is usually up to date.

I don't any trouble at all finding them. I just walk to my garage and there's probably between 10 and 15k.

When your favorites are available, never buy less than 1k at a time. Last time I bought 5k of Federal.

They don't go bad, they're not getting any cheaper, and you'll use them.

I don't mess with them but I have noticed a shortage of all kinds of primers. I use small pistol and large rifle and I always keep an eye out at Sportsmans warehouse every time I go. Prices went up here recently too. From 25 to 28 for 1k of winchester. Fortunatly they were still marked 25 the other day so thats what I got them for. I wish they would get some magtechs in they were 18 per k last time they had any. I bought them all.

Winchester Small Rifle are nowhere to be found. I'd pay whatever the going rate is to get 5k.

I'm not criticizing a fellow redneck I just want to point out that according to the latest edition of Lyman's Reloading Handbook, "The National Fire Protection Association's NFPA 495 states that not more than 10,000 primers should be stored in a private residence. This recommendation is law in most communities."

That is why I never have more than 9,999 on hand at any given time

Well, when I see the Primer Police coming, I'll stash them away. Thanks for the warning.

I store them in two different drawers. Maybe that counts..



Oh, and they're not in my residence, they're in my garage reloading room.

Primers have been scarce here in the Phoenix area for some time now. I have found that the Gun Shows are the best place to buy them, both for price and availability. Locally I try to buy them from Sportsman's Warehouse too, but usually their shelves are bare anymore. So I call Sportman's Warehouse on the phone when I am looking for more primers. If they tell me they have some in stock I ask them to put a couple of thousand behind the gun counter for me and I pick them up later. They always stash them behind the counter for me when I request it. I bought some there this past Wednesday and they were $28/1000 for WSP.

Why are 10,000 primers more dangerous than 20,000 primers?

So, 10,000 are 10,000 times as dangerous, and 20,000 is... I'm just yanking your chain. I don't have a clue why they capped it at 10,000. And I'm not going to confess how many I have on hand I just wanted to pass along something I read in case ya'll might not have been aware of it... is all.

powder valley has all but some of the fed primers in stock. I have started to use some of the wolf srm primers in my 223 and I like them alot. I especially like the price of them also. Widners will have anything you want in stock. It might seem like alot to pay for them in bulk with the haz mat fee tacked on but you will be far ahead by ordering them over the internet. no taxes and the more you buy from the stores the higher the cost of the tax is. on my last order of primers for powder valley I probably saved about 100 bucks this last time.
