I just got my first brick of Remington primers, #2 1/2 LPP, a few days after Thanksgiving. The brick didn't look big enough for 1K primers, but it is. Putting it in my primer cabinet I realized how small and compact it is next to the other primer boxes, especially the Federal boxes. So I did a quick comparison, and I could easily put two of the Remington bricks inside a Federal (brick) box. I might even be able to put three in without crushing or otherwise reshaping the boxes. This shouldn't amaze me, but it does.

I've read that the box size is to meet DOT regulations, and I get that, but are the Federal primers that much more sensitive and prone to detonation, or are there other reasons for the massive size difference in the packaging?

chris

Ok, to clarify, I'm not asking about prices, availability, or anything other than the size of the box. And the reason or reasons for the massive difference in the box sizes. It really did amaze me.

Yes, we get it. No offense, definitely. It’s one of those things that Federal did without explanation and it drives some people batty. Is it to meet and exceed DOT requirements? Probably. I seem to recall a spokesperson or two verifying that some years back. But really it’s a packaging thing: it’s far less costly to have one packaging blank for everything and #209’s won’t fit in the same packaging as Small Rifle/Pistol; but vice-versa works fine.

Or maybe I’m wrong and it’s all just a marketing ploy. Who knows?

[HINT: Federal. That’s who knows 😉]

uhhh, swag at it, they are the market test pidgeon, if nobody revolts, all the brands will all be that size sooner than later since smaller is cheaper to ship. unless it turns out there is some iherent issue with that packaging, and then we'll see Remington size back up, but they tried.

Yes, the Federal packages are larger and some people do have a problem with their size. I use an RCBS primer flip tray and never had a problem with the Federal packaging. I'd take a brick of large rifle primers in any size package at the moment.

At least one of my friends repackages them into CCI, Win to fit into the primer battery

As my NRA Metallic Reloading instructor said, a kid with a primer in one hand will magically materialize a hammer in their other hand.

So we need to store them safely, but with 10Ks of primers the primer safe battery is really tested by this excessive federal packaging

Um, I've got Rem SRP from years ago that are in tiny box's. Never sat and thought about it.

I have a brick of Alcan Max-Fire LRP that is roughly about half the size of a CCI brick.

UPS has been talking about going to dimensional weight vs scale weight for some time now. I am sure Federal will have to rethink their boxes if UPS does that.

This thread reminds me of that tune…

“I like big box, and I cannot lie,
My loading brothers can’t deny,
When the box shows up
With a thousand primer cups
Loading BB’s, yes am I!”

It’s a song by “Sir Loads a Lot”
Little know fact! Sir-Mix-alot is from the Seattle area… Well a ferry right away! lol

I’m making the popcorn this time if anybody wants some. 😣🤣
Thanks, Dude, that's generous of you.

I propose a new forum rule. In the future, anyone who starts a thread about the size of Federal primer boxes has to supply the popcorn.
We will now have a voice vote of all those present. All for the rule say "aye". All opposed say "nay".
I heard one "aye" and no "nays". "Ayes" have it. Rule passed. Meeting adjourned.
