Primer package sizes

Big Federal box may be for more sentive primers.

Federal primers contain some Nitroglycerin. CCI does not. Check the sds, Safety Data Sheet of both/others.

Many years ago, the Lee Hand Primer had a warning, not to use federal primers. Lee redesigned it around 2010 . It was possible to set off the whole tray of primer, if when seating a primer, it jammed & was forced.

Keep this in mind when seating any primer. If it jams, dont force it.

Thanks, Dude, that's generous of you.

I propose a new forum rule. In the future, anyone who starts a thread about the size of Federal primer boxes has to supply the popcorn.
We will now have a voice vote of all those present. All for the rule say "aye". All opposed say "nay".
I heard one "aye" and no "nays". "Ayes" have it. Rule passed. Meeting adjourned.
AYE!!!

"Bulk Reduction" engineering to packaging and shipping primers. Why make packaging bigger than it needs to be? It would be far more costly to send overseas, but I'm sure Federals packaging is for CONUS anyways, so no big deal.

Perhaps Federal had a KB that the other companies didnt?

I'm sure all of the packaging undergoes testing (even each batch)and certification before use. Can't afford a batch of brittle plastic.

Reminds me of how Russian 7.62x39 or S&B comes packaged 20 or 50 rounds (respectively) in the size of pack of cigarettes. Bulk reduction because container ships charge by volume.

Here I thought the " Will Storing Brass in a Metal Can accelerate corrosion?" or the "Will a .25 ACP go through a windshield at a 120 degree angle" Threads were going to be the best ones this week....
This one's pretty good, I'm putting my thinking cap on to come up with one that tops these.......🤔 Gonna sleep on it, it will come to me.....

I'd put in the ring that federal packaging prevents theft, and fills a marketing need of satisfaction. You feel like you got more, in the bigger package, even though you know better. I just present these as ideas as to why
..
Nice call! anti theft

Fiocchi Primers are packed side ways like Federal but they can pack 1500 in 1/2 of a 1000 fed box

It’s easy. I had an Italian engineering professor once and everyone failed his class, but now it all makes sense. He must have worked at Fiocci. 18 rows of 8. That math is hard, so simplify that to 18x10=180. Now correct for your simplification. 18x2=36. 180-36=144. A gross! But those pesky Americans won’t load in dozens. That’s the one thing they’re metric about. So add 6 to make it 150! That’s a non-standard size too but they can deal with it!

I knew a really sharp Alfa guy years ago that always said, about Italian engines; “It‘s not aa problem if they ah smoke, tha problem is if they don’tah smoke.” Meaning they are out of oil to burn...

The Montreal engines looked awesome for the day. All 197 HP they had...

I was told something similar by a British engineer about Triumphs: “The motorbike will mark its spot - much like any apex predator - unless it becomes ill. Then it must be rejuvenated by tender caring.”
Meaning, “You can ride it on Sunday but you have to work on it the other six days of the week.”

Yeah, I hate the Federal primer box. But...I was so glad to be able to get primers I snapped them up anyway. I can deal with the packaging when I have to.

math makes my braun hurt! that’s why they made calculators !

Word I heard on the Fed primer packaging, from an employee, that it was it was developed for proposed DOT regulation that never took effect. There was a set distance between edge of all primers that had to be observed in 3 dimensions. This was concurrent with the actual time of the switch in the early 90's when I shot clay games at their company owned target range in Ramsey, MN. Their packaging division (on the same property as the ammo plant) tooled up for this new proposed regulation. It is now cheaper to continue the larger packaging than re-tool to minimal standards for a niche market such as reloading components. I believe their packaging is compliant with certain L, S, and A carriers overseas as well, so another incentive to maintain status quo.
