I am using a pocket uniformer device and assumed it would handle the military primer crimp in the military 556 brass I was starting with. I still have difficult primer insertion. I am still using a reamer to remove the crimp.
I've used about every type of primer pocket reamer for large and small Military crimped primer pockets. I finally found a reamer that cuts very well without taking off too much or too little. It is the Hornady primer pocket reamer. Well worth the $10.00.
I attach the reamer to a threaded driver bit and put it in a variable speed drill set at low speed in a padded vice. Set up this way, it is very fast.
The next beast is the Forster primer pocket reamer cutter used in the Forster trimming lathe.
Like you, I thought it would take out the crimp. I use the RCBS and mine does not really take the crimp out, but it is a good indicator as to whether the pocket is crimped or not. If it doesnt want to go in, then there is a crimp ring I missed. Out comes the Lyman hand tool....It works, but is slow. FLIGHT762 mentioned the Hornady and I always thought it does look like it would work really well. Nice to hear that it does. It's on my wish list at Midway .
