Gents;
Just started reloading for the 300 WSM, and I've been learning that the fat cases cause their own set of issues. I've found suitable work arounds for all except one: My Lee Auto-Prime's (Hand held priming tool) jaws aren't wide enough to let the case in to be primed. I have the right shell holder, but the case won't fit in the tool :banghead:.

So...what are my options? I'm looking at the Lee Ram Prime, but I fear the same issue may arise. What about the Lyman Ram Prime type deal? Kind of looking for a press mounted device that is cost effective. Does the RCBS hand tool work better with WSMs?

I could use some advice on this one. Thanks.

I personally would get the Hornady hand priming tool, it's faster, works well and can be used with Hornady, RCBS, Redding, and Lee regular press shell holders. The thing I did was get that tool and bought a set of Lee "press" shell holders, not the auto prime shellholders, but the shellholders for reloading presses, they come in a green plastic case, you can get them from Cabela's, and now I can reload and prime for damn near any caliber under the sun.

Lee Auto Prime and the .300 WSM

Lever Gun Junkie--BTDT!!

When I began loading for the .300 Whizzie, I discovered the same thing. Took my dremel tool, put a small grinding wheel on it, and ground out the top of the Auto-Prime body so as to accept the fat cases.

It worked slick.

Lee later said that that treatment would not affect their warranty, when I had occasion to ask.

So you can solve yr problem with a dremel tool and 5 min. work.

No biggie.

i'm not familiar w/ that tool and it looks like smokey has your fix, but i prime wsm cases on an rcbs hand primer with no issues.

I use the RCBS hand priming tool that uses the shell holder from my press so there is no problem with the fat cases fitting in.

Yeah, BTDT, got the "T" shirt!:)

Now when you go to pull some mistakes, you'll find they don't go in your RCBS kinetic puller either. My solution to that was to chuck my inside deburr tool in a drill, make the opening bigger!:D

My RCBS kinetic puller doesn't have any problems with the WSM. I cut a piece of mouse pad and rolled it so it fits in the bottom of the puller. When the pulled bullets come out of the case, the nose sticks into the pad and doesn't get smashed into the bottom of the puller.

I use a foam ear plug. No dinged up bullet noses then!

My RCBS is at least 10 YO, it had to be opened up to take the 300 WSM case. YMMV.

my rcbs puller accepts wsm and rum cases and still has the felt from rcbs to capture bullets. it is probably 6-7 years old - maybe older.

since we diverted to puller talk...

I am using the Hornady cam-over puller, and it has pulled loads without even scratching the bullet. It is very fast as well. Way faster than the kinetic, no spilled powder, and no deformed bullets. Cheap, but you have to buy a collet for each caliber.
