I found a bunch of printable targets that I wanted to try out. The problem is the paper tears like crazy. I've tried 2 different types of paper for my inkjet printer with the same results. I threw away the packages that the paper I'm using came in a long time ago but I know they were 2 types of fairly expensive Hammermill paper.

What kind of paper do you use for targets to show clean hits without all the tearing?

I use the cheapest ink jet paper I can find.

At each corner, I transparent tape my printed targets to a slightly larger piece of corrugated cardboard. This gives them a supportive backing.

Tearing on the target backing? Use the 3M spray adhesive instead of staples. A can costs about $4 and lasts several range sessions. No more chasing targets that blow off.

I must be doing something wrong

I have an oldish laser printer, print on the back of any junk paper (= other side used) I have laying around, and have no problems at all.

Either thicker or thinner will work, depending on whats behind the target.
FWIW, I use heavier stuff and have had no problems. Thinner stuff somtimes ripped when suspended by itsself, but was fine with a cardboard backing.
