I have just purchased Pro Ears Gold, an electronic earmuff. I have been using a Peltor Bull's-eye Ultimate 10, which is a passive earmuff with an NRR of 29 db. The Pro Ears has an NRR of 33. I haven't taken the Pro Ears to the range yet, but when I compare them (turned off) with the Peltor, the Peltor is a lot quieter. Right now I'm sitting in my study with a TV on at normal volume. I can still hear every word when I put on the Pro Ears, but I can't make out the words with the Peltor. Are the Pro Ears a ripoff, or is there some scientific explanation? Thanks.

That's the whole benefit of electronic earmuffs. They allow you to hear normal sounds (and even amplify quite sounds) but still filter out loud sounds, i.e. gunshots.

I really want some of these soon. My major concern is my wife. I want her to be able to hear me, but also have hearing protection G-d forbit if anything ever happened in the house.

Broboyer,

Sorry, I must have been unclear. What I was trying to say is that with the Pro Ears turned OFF, they don't filter out as much noise as my passive muffs.

At a 4 dB difference you should be hearing about half the "volume" with the higher NRR rated muffs as with the lower.

Anything at all different about how you're wearing them? Glasses off? Comfortably adjusted on your head? Ear pads in good condition?

I've been using Pro-Ears for close to 10 years now.

I used to double up on hearing protection in the indoor range or the shoothouses - foamies and a muff.

I don't have to do that with the Pro Ears.

Perhaps you're not getting a good seal against your cheeks with them? That model Pro-Ears has a bit larger cup than most brands.

Are you wearing glasses with them? At around 50 yo I suddenly found my arms were too short and I needed glasses to hold papers comfortably. ;)The ear pieces on glasses will cause a gap in the ear pads and that can allow a lot more noise in with a thin ear pad than a plush one.
