I am trying to remove a synthetic stock from a Reminton 1100 so that we can put a shorter stock on it. The action spring plug will not loosen at all. Is it standard thread direction (righty tighty, lefty loosy)? Is a penetrating oil like Kroil going to discolor the synthetic stock? Is the plug (the screw head looking thingy) all that I have to take out to get the stock off? I am totally ignorant about how the stock is put on, and Remington's parts schematic is not extremely helpful.

The Action Spring Tube Nut just unscrews normally. Kroil might help it and will not hurt the stock - but you only need a drop on the threads. A proper fitting screw driver and a secure way to hold the stock really helps.

Make sure that screwdriver fits correctly, or you can split a stock - been there done that. My smith made himself a tool similar to the one Remington sells for smiths

One stock bolt trick is to wrap a thick layer of tape around the screwdriver shank just behind the blade itself.

Make the tape wrap thick enough that it will just pass down the hole.
The tape wrap centers the bit and prevents slipping out of the slot.

On wood stocks this prevents splintering the wood.

That is a neat trick with the screwdriver, but on the synthetic stocks, they are totally hollow so that would not work. But I will file the trick away for the future.

I use a square shanked screwdriver, the bigger the better. Use a crecent wrench on the square shank and you can apply more leverage. I had one that was so rusty had to cut it off with a dremel tool and replace. Guy had been putting his stock down in the water duck hunting in the salt marsh, wouldn't budge.
