I just got an old RG .22 magnum revolver from my grandparents' house to take to the range just for a cheap handgun to shoot, but there's something wrong with it. The cylinder doesn't shut all the way (at least easily) because the little retractable piece behind it that I assume helps to rotate the cylinder (kind of inexperienced with wheelguns) doesn't go in without me pushing it in, then pushing the cylinder into place, THEN messing with the hammer and trigger until it locks in flush.

Also I noticed that the cylinder doesn't always turn when the hammer is cocked...is it a lost cause or is there some kind of easy fix? I was really kinda excited about having a cheap range pistol.

It's a lost cause. They weren't built well when new and if it is having problems I wouldn't even consider it safe to fire at this point.

Seriously, you have no way of knowing what else in that gun is broken or is going to break. They weren't good new and aren't worth the trouble broken.

Is it a single action and or, a cowboy gun?
If it is then you have to put it on 1/2 cock to put in the cylinder.
When you cock the hammer it will make 4 audible clicks as it goes back.
You want to stop on the number two click then the hand [thats the part that rotates the cylinder] will go in the frame.
Now if the hand will not come out when all is back together Try a gunsmith.
I have an RG .22 .22 mag and it was a whole bunch of fun back when................. but it wore out, now the cylinder pin will not stay in.
I hope this helps and good luck.

Yeah, it's a single action. Tried it at half-cock...still won't go in. Thanks for the replies, fellas, but sounds like it's hopeless.
