I took my new Sig P226 to the range today for the first time and put 250 rounds through it. Around 5 or 6 times the slide didn't stay open after the last shot was fired from the mag. I'm not sure if it's a big problem but should I take the gun back or is it a small problem that I can fix?

couple of things to check before sending back. may be your grip is releasing the slide catch. or, it may be a magazine problem, check another magazine and the springs.

I had this happen on a new P226. I checked my grip and had someone else try it, the problem remained. It turns out that dried packing grease was causing the slide lever to bind. After a thorough cleaning the problem disappeared never to return.

Thanks guys, I gave it a thorough cleaning and will try it out again in a couple of days. I'm sure it's not my grip though because I have a really small hand and I can't even reach the slide release while I'm shooting. What would be wrong with the mag that it would be causing the slide not to stay open?

It is *very* easy to accidently engage the slide release on the Sig series of pistols. That's because of the location of the release nearer to the back of the gun then most other designs. Even if you think you can't reach the slide release while shooting, under recoil you are likely depressing the slide release just a bit without even noticing. That's enough to keep the slide from locking open.

Clean and lube the gun and make sure the slide release can move freely. Then shoot some more. Try shooting a few rounds deliberately with a "poor" grip where you hand is not as high on the gun as it should be. (Your accuracy and recoil control will go to heck, but this is just for diagnostic purposes. Be careful to maintain control of the gun though). See if you can grip the gun in such a way that the slide *does* lock back. If it does lock back when you have a poor grip, really low on the gun, then you know for sure that your normally hitting the slide release under recoil.

This is such a common issue with Sigs that I'd be surprised if there is anything else causing it. It can happen with any grip, but is especially easy to do if you shoot with a thumbs forward grip.

I also found out that if you put the mag spring in backwards (fits either way it seemed to me) it will bind and not push the slide release up far enough to lock the slide on the last shot.

Another way to check is to simply put an empty mag in pistol and cycle the action. It should lock back at this point. Try it with every mag a few times, and if it keeps locking back you know it's your grip. Or if it doesn't always lock back you know it's not your grip. :D

+1 My guess is that it is a magazine problem. Try having a friend shoot your pistol to see if he has the same problem. But I would definitely put at least another 200 - 300 rounds through it before contacting Sig.

Habits, good and bad

Never having owned a 1911 model, I have never had a problem with grip and the "close" slide release, yet, it may be a carry-over problem from time spent with 1911 safety designs, as well.

LS ;)

PS.. give that P226 a good cleaning and get some fine lubrication on that release lever, and work it manually till it snaps back, click like.

Also, if your mag spring is too loose it won't have enough pressure to push up the slide catch at the end, or if the pressure down from the slide catch overcomes it because it's so new and tight, that will cause that problem too. Sounds like it needs some break-in and perhaps a new mag if that doesn't do it.

Here's an idea that hasn't been covered yet.

My girlfriends P229ST 9mm had the same problem. We are in CA with a 10 round limit on magazines.

I called sig and they told me that in fact all Sigs shipped to CA are supposed to have a different slide stop installed. They say some left the factory for CA that did not have this slide stop on it.

Sig sent one free of charge, we installed it, fixed the problem

I agree

...

I must have been one of the lucky ones to get his Sig P229R Carry CT 9mm with the correct slide-release lever, as she has 1600 rounds thru her and no jams or FTF, just 100% perfect, unlike her shooter.. lol

If the slide locks back when you manually cycle it on an empty mag the problem is likely thumb related.

Limp-wristing and dry slide and frame rails can cause this as well. If the ejected cases are coming straight back towards you instead of to the side then it's likely a wrist/lube issue.
