Trying to help a friend with his AT-84. I have not actually seen the malfunctions, so I am relying on his description:

- it will chamber a round from the magazine, fire, but only partially extract, and then a double-feed is created. The chamber was polished, the extractor hook is not broken. Not sure of the ejector (he is checking on it to make sure it is not broken). Does not matter how many rounds are in hte magazine - only a single shot gun right now.

Any suggestions or commonly seen problem with this breed ?

the Beretta design is pretty sound, been around a LONG time
BUT

The chamber was polished
makes me leery, go to the top of the Gunsmithing Forum, and you will see 1911tuner's FAQ on ramp & Chamber jobs on the 1911

Here's the gist, if you aren't a gunsmith, or an apprentice under a competent gunsmith
DON'T DO IT
more guns destroyed by someone trying to 'smooth it out' than anything else.

AT-84 problems

I assume you miss-typed - the AT-84 is a Swiss made CZ clone.

Both the owner and I have attended many armorers course during our careers as LEOs. We just lack experience with this platform.

Had same problem with Hi-Power. Empty left in chamber fresh round partly out of mag slide back. Smith who fixed it said it was extractor issue.

there's an AT-84 that's a Beretta clone, but I know the arm you speak up
I'd go with extractor issue, also check the mag, see if the brass is getting hung up and getting knocked off the extractor before it hits the ejector.

AT-84 problem - more info

My friend reports he is able to hand-cycle an entire magazine of ammunition:

-feed and chamber
-eject and feed another round

with no problems noted. The live rounds are completely ejected. Now, I have not actually witnessed this yet.

It just gets more curious. I would think that an extractor problem might prevent this. True, hand-cycling is not the same as live ire, but still...

Extractors have springs. Springs loose their springiness.

I suspect the CZ extra-strength extractor spring from Wolff will work (it did in my AT-84s) and MIGHT solve the problem. It's a cheap solution.

My AT-84s (the Swiss-assembled CZ clone based on Tanfoglio-made components) was the base for my highly customized gun, and it remains one of my most treasured weapons.

In addition to the extractor, tell your friend to try a variety of different ammo.

The AT-84 was known to be ammo sensitive and will have different types of jams with some ammo.
Since each gun is an individual, some ammo brands or types would work in one gun and not another.

And there really are two different AT-84 pistols. There is the original AT-84, which was made from the CZ-spec pistols that ITM made as a sub-contractor for CZ (marked CZ but also stamped "Made in Switzerland"). Following that production, ITM switched to the simpler Tanfoglio modifications and then produced the new pistol as the AT-84S. The AT-84 is a true clone, part for part, with a pre "B" CZ-75. The AT-84S is a Tanfoglio-based pistol with a frame that has a CZ aesthetic but remains a small-frame Tanfoglio in design. The AT-84S is also basically the same pistol as the 9mm Springfield Armory P9.
