Problems with Mossberg 590

Hey there, just registered, used to be a TFL member, etc, etc.

I have a slight issue. I just bought a Mossberg 590 SP, 9 rd mag, ghost ring sites, and I love it. I went to the range, and put 50 rds of target load through it. My shoulder is now nicely bruised. Unfortunately, while I was in the second box of 25, I would fire a round, then go to cycle the gun, and it would just not move. I couldn't pull the slide back, even if I pushed in the lock release by the trigger gaurd. It did this on more than one occasion. The only way I could get it to eventually cycle, was to jam on it until it finally worked. Needless to say, I was a little angry. My friend said it might need to be oiled or cleaned. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Let me guess, it only happens when you actually have ammo loaded, eh? No problems when empty?

Did the same thing with my 590 Mariner. Once you hit about 200 ~ 300 rounds, you'll be fine. It's just some rough edges that need to be used.

check the insides for breakages.


give it another 25-50 rounds. if it continues to do that, send it back to mossberg and have them look at it.

Was the ammo high brass or low?

A little oil on the action bars, etc. probably wouldn't hurt. If this is a brand new 590 you might want to oil a little and pump a lot until it is smooth. Mossberg pumps don't normally act that way. Mine was smoooooth from pump one thru 5000.

Were you using Winchester ammo? I have had that experience as have a couple of other folks on Gun-Talk.com. Seems to happen with their French made crap, (le force de crap) whatever they plate the "brass" area with welds itself to a hot barrel (my theory).

Put one drop of good lube on each action bar and pump it a few times. Then, run a box of different ammo through it to see if the ammo is the problem.

More than likely, it's just new. Some grunge could cause this, but this is too new for much buildup, right?

I smooth up a new pump by working the slide a few hundred times, then polishing the wear marks with a very fine hard Arkansas stone, crockstick,etc. A deep clean to remove excess lube, grunge, even filings from manufacture is a good idea before first use. Relubing(wipe on,wipe off) and use finish it off.

Thanks for the replies! It was Winchester ammo, now that I think of it. It was in a silver box, and had a big "X" on it, if I remember correctly. They didn't have target load in stock, so I shot some game load.

I'll oil and clean it this weekend, then go back and see if it happens again.

I'm not sure about the brass 'welding' theory, because in effort to unjam it, I was pushing the shell back into the magazine, trying to get it to unjam on whatever I thought it was stuck on, with no luck. It did slide freely, though.

Now that I think of it, you're talking about the shell in the chamber, which is a possibility.

my 500 does that too an i cant figure it out. an its far from new? might try the polishing with the crock stics though.

mine does it if i fire rounds kinda fast to it or if its a really hot day?
