Been reading THR for a long time, finally joined a while back and decided to make my first post a fun one :) I think I finally found my "Vera". I saw this one, did some research, and had to get it. I was in the market for a semi-auto 308 and found an outstanding deal on this girl with original box and paperwork. I checked the serial # and it is a 2009 production. And after firing it, I have no regrets about having to sell a couple guns and odds and ends to get it.

It came with an Osprey 3-18x50mm scope, but it was raised super high and the charge handle still hit the bell so I took my cheap little Osprey 4-12x44, removed the rear sight and dropped it low. Later this year I will look at getting new optics, but it ate up most of my gun money for the first half of the year at least.

Took her to the range Tuesday to sight it in and try different ammunitions. Of course all hunting rounds (6 types). After the range trip I got a deal on 240 rounds of match and a 200 round German battle pack, so those will be ready for the next range day. The recoil was like butter. Ran about 70 rounds through it and no shoulder fatigue at all. No failures or any issues. Now keep in mind that I am VERY new to shooting rifles. Only been shooting scoped rifles for about a year or two so I learn more every time I shoot. But I was getting consistent 1" groups and a few 2" groups (it was freezing and 20 mph winds, so i was not as steady as I would like). Not bad groups for a newbie. I would love for a pro to put some match down her and see what she actually does.

The 8 pound trigger is a bit heavy. I need to find a good gunsmith that can do a trigger job and maybe something about the stiff safety. But with a trigger job and some new optics ................. woooooooo Vera. "She is my very favorite gun"

And a few details on her:
PTR MSG-91 .308/7.62x51mm NATO Semi-Automatic Delayed Roller Recoil Operated Battle Rifle with a 18" fluted barrel, black furniture, tactical handguard with a 3" rail, welded picatinny accessory rail and Harris bipod, H&K style pre-ban flash hider, a black H&K navy type polymer trigger group, a black Magpul PRS2 adjustable buttstock

Great looking groups! Any FTE or FTF's? I know that some of the PTR-91 rifles are picky with surplus ammo. That is a great looking rifle and as far as trigger work goes http://www.triggerwork.net/ is a supposed to be a great place to get a 5-7lbs trigger pull on HK-9X series rifles.

It functioned flawless. But it was all commercial 308 ammo. I am going to try the German milsurp next time. Their site lists types to avoid like tar sealed SA.

But even then, some of them will eat anything. I know it likes deer rounds

I shoot SA through mine all the time. Have yet to have a problem with it.

Take the time to hit the chamber with carb cleaner immediately after the shoot is over. This reduces cleaning time significantly. Bore brushes are a must.

The last few days I've read posts about PTR's being finicky with ammo. This is the first I've ever heard of that. Where do these opinions come from?

I am going to try different types in mine to see if it has issues with anything. Perhaps they are running 500 rounds of tar sealed SA between cleanings.

What cleaner do you use?

Whatever carb cleaner I have on hand. Nothing magical. I then clean the bejeezus out of the thing with Hoppe's #9 and then Rem Oil.

I keep it lubed with synthetic bearing grease rated to -40F.

Nice rifle! I bought the standard PTR91 several years ago and I've since installed that same Magpul PRS. I really like it. Added a STANAG rail and my Leupold CQ/T and it's a fun little (OK so it's not little) rifle.

I've shot the South African surplus too but it's not particularly accurate for me. I've had better luck with the Serbian PPU stuff but mostly I am shooting my own reloads in this. Do invest in the port buffer if you want to reload, my brass comes out completely undamaged now.

I am going to see what I come across at shows. I just picked up a German DAG Battle Pack and a couple hundred rounds of match to play with. Can't wait to get her back to the range.

I completely missed this last time. Can you point me in the right direction on a port buffer?

Crap, I don't think that one will work on the PTR MSG91 because of the integrated rail.

Yeah you are probably right, yuk. I have the clamp on rail and there is a bit of clearance under that for the port buffer.
