Anyone know of any public land hog hunting areas this year.In California it is getting more and more difficult to hunt unless a guide is used.Lake Sonoma is bow hunt only and that is all we know of so far. any help?

hunter liggett.
allegedly frank raines park in "livermore/patterson off i5/ del puerto canyon rd. It says "during season" but hogs are year round... i never saw any on that side of the mt hamilton though. otheriwse pickens are few and far between.

I 'heard' that santa clara county was paying trappers to eradicate hogs from Grant Ranch ! ***! they could charge $500 each to a coupole dozen guys, close teh place off for the weekend to hunters only and clean it out.

let me know if you find any.

Guy named Bob Robb writes books on the subject. He gives good leads on public land hunting.
Monterrey County
I think if you follow the Carmel Valley Road all the way in to China Camp there is some public land hunting. You must unload to cross the Tassajara property. Public land hunting here in CA is very difficult.

Tejon Ranch has a once a year public weekend hunt that is free. You must use an all copper bullet on their land.

Public land hunting for Hogs

From what I am finding out, there is land near Hollister that is BLM land that has Hogs. You must contact the BLM office in Hollister about it, their website has locations. Here's the area's they mention: Stockdale Mtn, Juaquin Ridge, Laguna Mtn, and Curry Mtn. The Ph# is 831-630-5000. Ask to speak to the recreation planner. I am going to call today (3/29/07) and see what else I can find out. I have also heard the Fort Hunter Liggett has hog hunting, but I am not sure what prerequesets there are to be able to hunt there. Someone even mentioned Camp Roberts to me while I was at work. I was even told there were some hogs in area D-8 near Lake Isabella ... Good luck, send me any info you might get...

California Hog Hunting..

I have found some more news from some websites :
WILD PIG HUNTING

Prime Public Hunting Areas:

Lake Sonoma WA offers drawings for wild pig hunts every year. Call the DFG in Yountville (707-944-5500) for more information.

Fort Hunter Liggett is a good spot to hunt hogs. It's a permit only hunt on military land. Call (831-386-2214).

Coalinga offers some good hunting areas on BLM land off of Coalinga Road. Contact the BLM field office in Hollister at (831-630-5015) for more information concerning specific areas and maps.

Healdsberg, Booneville, King City, & Hollister all are excellent areas for wild pig hunting, unfortunately most of this property is privately owned and leased by private hunting clubs. Check with BLM to see if there are some public properties in these areas.

Cottonwood Creek WA has 4,000 acres of steep coastal terrain. Call (209-826-0463) for more information.
I have also been in contact with a Craig Stowers of the Calif. DFG. He says that he will send me some info and also put me in touch with one of their people that actually work in that area of the DFG.. I am keeping my fingers crossed....lol

More news about Public Land Hunting for Hogs

I received the booklet from fish and game, it has 29 area's that mention pig hunting. You can view the whole pdf file on the Calif. Fish and Game website under the wild pig section, its about 42 pages long so be patient for it to download. It seems like there are more pigs are located south of Monterey if you really want to hunt on public land, but there are some in the north as well, just not as many. At the end of the file you will find the listing of the sites and what type of hunting you might find there. The file is a few years old, but it gives what is a general description of the last few years of the pig populations in those area's.
I have word that the pigs are moving down to the feilds near Paso Robles from a few hunters here that have friends that own ranches there. Looks like the rain is helping the Barley crops and the pigs are moving down out of the hills to feed. One hunter said that his friend called him Monday night and said that he seen up to 70 hogs that day in the feilds. Personally, I take this with a grain of salt, but I have seen pigs in groups of up to 30 so, who but the rancher that seen them really knows. Wish I could have gotten an invite to go with him...The hunter did buy 2 tags and was leaving today to go get some pigs... Since I work at the local Walmart in the sporting goods dept., I will keep asking for news of good places to hunt pigs and pass the word.
Good Hunting............. M. Padilla, Barstow, Ca.

Your in Barstow I didnt know there was a walmart out there. I live in Los Angeles and when I hunt the Mojave I thought Hesperia was my last walmart I could stop at. If you hunt hogs and want to meet up for a hunt let me know. Right now I'm trying to focus on turkeys
