OK, here in town we have a real nice piblic place to shoot. It is private land, but the land owner was cracious enough to let people shoot there. We had an excellent natural backstop, relatively flat ground out to 300 yards in most spots and enough room for 30 to 50 groups of shooter to shoot safely (about 2-3 miles of berm. We have been shooting here as long as I can remember.

Now that we have so many more people living in the valley, the place had become extreemly popular. There are days when you have to wait for one of your favorite spots to shoot, even with all the space.

Well, some people felt the nees to bring junk with them to shoot, old washers, dryers, fridges, barrels, computers, you name it, it has been brought out to shoot at. Normally, I could care less what junk people brought out to shoot. To eash thier own, you know. But do they have to leave the junk behind when they leave? This place has gone down hill rapidly the last couple of seasons. There have been cars dumped upside down in the creek, and piles of junk just scattered over this poor guys land.

Several gourps of us have volunteered to come out and pick up and we had been making a difference, they even let some guys out of the prison once or twice to police up the area. All was good and the land owner was at least happy with us. Well, There just to be too many slobs and we couldn't keep up with them any more. We posted signs asking people to pick up after themselfs and posted notices of the dates we would bring trucks out to pick up the trash and aaked for help. It had gotten so bad that the land own started posting signs that if things didn't change he would close the land down. Well, slobs being the slobs they are, even uprooted those signs and shot them up and left them on the ground. WHAT JERKS! Well, the land owner had had enough and rightfully posted his land and closed it off. :cuss:

Well, a firend and I, having to accept the landowners decision went on a scouting trip to find a new spot to go to. Just south of the now closed land is a huge expance of BLM land. Most of this land is held by the local National Guard for manuver and firing areas. This area is not getting much use from the Guard right now as they are mostly in Iraq at the moment.

Out in this land are several natural berms and safe places to shoot. Think of severl thousand acres of ectreemly flat desert with volcanic mounds and creek beds scattered about. Well, the slobs have been out. Every single spot were you could safely shoot has the same piles of junk left behind that the old range area did, even worse as it is more scattered about. :barf:

For many years, the Guard has been very acceptant of sharing the land with AVT riders, horse riders, hikers, explorers (there are some caves), and even shooters, (pigeons, whistle pigs, yotes, and jack rabbits). They have been very good about accepting us on thier land as long as we respected thier space and didn't create unsafe conditions for the troops when they were out training and picked up after ourselvs.

Now, the guard commander has not seen this trash heap his land has turned into, but I can't imagine him reacting very well to it. Somthing like when the DI found Pvt Pyle's jelly doughnut :what:

Why do these people have to be slobs? How gosh darn tough is it to toss empty ammo boxes into the back of the truck, take a trash bad or two with you and police up used targets, blown up milk jugs and spent brass? Why do people think that this is thier dumping ground? Its not like we dont have a freaking trash service in this town. Thee people are just giving shootiner a real bad image.

When the commander gets back, sees this crap pile his traning facility has turned into, I would be rather shocked if he didn't lock it down and boot everyone off (I would if I were him). Then we (shooters) will have made enemies of all the other users out there. The ATVs, horses, nature people will all blame all shooters for the closure of the land. :uhoh:

AAARRRRGGGHHHH! :cuss: :(

I'm sure these groups of people have thier own slobs as well. I ride bike trails a lot and sometimes I see a great deal of trash and such.

Most folks suck. Plain and simple. I can't list the number of outdoor ranges we've had closed in Southern California because of trash. It's simply pathetic.

Same goes with the off road and ATV community. More trails and areas posted off limits then you can shake a stick at.

For every volunteer and/or person who picks up their own and other peoples trash, 10 will follow right behind treating areas like their own private trash can.

For every owner who joins an organization, you have 10 who refuse to support them either with money or their time.

We get what we deserve. No sense of accountability or responsibility.

Go look at a public restroom. That's all anything public is to most people.

:cuss: :banghead: :cuss: :banghead:

It is regretably so darned typical ... those who spoil every damn thing they touch or get involved in. Total and utter selfishness and disregard for others.

I am often almost ashamed to have to share the same genetic code as these low-lifes, really. Some of my other thoughts stretch way beyond what would be regarded as remotely High Road I might add!!

Reminds me of a parking lot I saw the day after a Jimmy Buffet concert. Talk about slobs. :banghead: I hate "Parrotheads" to this day. Buffet is ok, but I've got nothing nice to say about his fans.

We lost the privilege around here of shooting on a friendly farmer's land when just such a situation existed. Just another example of the few ruining it for everybody. I used to police it up and tote out all the junk whenever I went there as a courtesy to the owner but it would be right back to just as bad within a couple of weeks.

Sad, just sad...

Sometimes I wonder about "the few spoiling it for the many". From what I often see of the outdoors, it's the many spoiling it for the few.

Happens here too. people are too worried about themselves now-a-days. They don't to spend the money for proper disposal of thes large items and are to freakin' lazy to pick up after they've had their fun. Happens in all different activities and because of it, a lot of land is becoming off-limits. Those with the respect for others property are the ones that suffer. The culprits simply move elsewhere and ruin it for even more honest folks. personally, I'd like to see the culprits downrange holding the targets for us clean folks. A more sensible approach is for harsher penalties for thsoe doing this immature crap. Throw them in jail for while - regardless of thier past. 1 strike you're out!
Had similar probs at a local private club as well so even in this situation, it's those on the inside ithout any manners. Luckily the new club I'm in has members that respect the faciltiy.

Don't feel bad, I belong to a private club, and we have signs up all over, to remove your old targets, and pick up your brass, and you would not believe how many club members just leave their crap behind....

Folks like you're describing are what stocks & pillories in the town square were invented for and it's a darn shame we can't reinstitute the practice! Oh, no...they've got "rights"! That would violate their "dignity"...as if they had any to start with.

I've run into the same principle as an OTR trucker. Numbnuts leave their trash and pee jugs on someone's property and next thing you know it's "No Truck Parking"....and I don't blame the owners in the least. I'd do the same if it were my place.

Dipsticks! Geesh.

Forget the stocks. These slobs need laid over the washer or drier or automobile they brought along to shoot up. Sometimes drastic measures are all that will work.

:fire: character, a gift you give to yourself. not much gift giving these days, sad to say.

I always get a little upset with the postings on here like "Is it ok to shoot an empty propane tank" and stuff like that.

Granted, the original poster usually says that he'll carry it out, but someone will read it, and get the idea about shooting a propane tank, then leave it out there.

It just makes us look like slobs. If you bring it in, you carry it out.

It comes down to common courtesy, which is not so common any more. Just look down the sides of the highways and notice how much trash is there. I have seen people throw out whole bags of trash onto the side of the road. It just burns me up. :cuss:

Closed down some ranges

Here in Los Angeles County after many years of people abandoning all kinds of junk, the county folks finally closed off a bunch of open ranges that shooters could practice better scenarios (didn't have to stay in one place) We used to set up water bottles, etc.. real easy to bag it and trash it.

So because of a few people, we all lost out. I go out there once in a while...still not open...Sigh. :banghead:

I believe that this situation has a lot to do with the way that we've raised our kids for the past 30 years...to be selfish, whiny, inconsiderate, impolite little brats, just like their parents.

Some of you older members may remember the public service announcement from the 1970's, which showed a "native American", turning towards the camera with a tear running down his cheek, as he lamented the trash heap that his country had become. I believe that he would not have a mere tear running down his cheek these days...he'd be throwing a full fledged, hysterical hissy fit.

Ditto. Upbringing really makes a huge difference in your kids. I see it on a daily basis, and it drives me INSANE. :banghead:

I know some ATV riders that used to ride on public land. Everything went well for about 3 years until some new guys came around. See, the land went near some homes, and the ATVs that the new guys were riding had modified their ATVs which made them about 5x louder than stock models. The homeowners complained, the other ATV riders tried to waen them, but they didn't care. The land was closed to all motorized traffic.

We all have our jerks.

Unfortunately, my generation of the 60's brought on the "Slob generation"
There is no such thing as "Respect". It only exists in the Dictionary. :(
I live in the country and I had some slobs for neighbors. They used to shoot in my direction and did not care if I was in the way. One day I shot back with my AR15 and called the sheriff. They moved 2 weeks later. Yea slobs are going to be a real problem in the future.

Comes down to something I learned as a kid....
