Today was the opening of small game season in Michigan.
My son, Little Loudmouth, and I went out for a while looking for grouse.
The area has been good to me before but some logging had been done and that changed things a bit. There are going to be a ton of raspberries and blackberries there next year and there haven't been that many before, for instance. (My wife has been notified.)
We saw no grouse and no gray squirrels or rabbits.
The sky was cloudless and blue and the woods looked good. We had a good time opening the season together.
I took my Mossberg 590 since I needed some pictures of me in the woods with it. LL used his Sears Model 20. For a change we could use the same ammo and took a box and a half of Winchester "Super Speed" XTRA heavy game loads. They use a ounce of seven and a halfs at 1350 fps.
I haven't shot any game with these loads but they worked well in both shotguns on clay targets this summer and last fall.
I didn't get out much last year, so starting off on opening day this year felt good.
