My son and I usually go to the range on Monday morning.
For some reason, it's usually just us, (and my wife picking blueberries) then. :D

I've been working with my 1911s, BHPs,.357 Smiths and M1A, for the past few weeks. (I had a shooting class in mid-July.) I didn't have much ambition, so decided to relax by shooting shotguns.

We brought Little Loudmouth's J.C. Higgins 200 12 gauge, my Mossberg 590 12 gauge, and my FIAS 20 gauge OU. I also brought some Gauge Mate 20-.410 gauge reducers. Ammo included Estate Mighty-Lite seven eighths ounce 12s, Federal 20 gauge 8s, Winchester Super-Speed Xtra 12 gauge seven and a halfs, and a box of Remington three-inch .410s.

We started with the 12s. The light Estate rounds didn't seem much different than the Winchesters to me in the 590 with it's light synthetic furniture. They were noticeably lighter in the J.C. Higgins. Both smoked targets when we hit them right.

I shot a few 20s in the OU just to keep my hand in. Then LL and I burned up the box of .410s in the 20 gauge. It was very relaxing. In the six-pound 20 gauge the .410s had almost no felt recoil. We were hand throwing targets and so were shooting at short range. The .410s powdered some close targets, just like the bigger gauges.

We did go over to the rifle side and shoot for a while afterward, (I even practiced magazine changes with a pistol,) but the shotguns were the real purpose, and fun, of the trip.

I have to buy some more .410s!
