Pump or semi-auto?

"apples or oranges. which ever taste better to you"

Doesn't help. Not one iota. Thanks for playin, though.

Futo Ino - The previous comment may not help you, because the question may not be answerable. Some people can shoot pumps very fast. Others may be quicker with an autoloader. Most 870s are going to be very reliable, and some 1100s may be nearly so.

I would tend to think that it comes down to the shooter's preference and the particular shotguns he or she is actually shooting. If you feel more comfortable and faster shooting your 870, then that's the choice for you.

I would feel very comfortable with a pump, or with my Benelli auto. I've not used it for 3-gun or anything, but I've shot tons of shells through it and played quite a bit of Crazy Quail, which forces you to reload quickly. I'm probably faster with it than with my pumps. FWIW, the only FTFs I've ever had with shotguns have been on pumps.

In the end, it comes down to the individual and their equipment.

There are probably people out there that are faster "practically" with a pump them me with a semi-auto Tom Knapp for one. But I think with equal training on both pump and semi-auto I would be slightly faster "practically" on a semi.

I'll put my 2 cents in and go with an auto.
I've taken several tactical shotgun classes and my 11-87 could blast 3 steel targets faster than the combat master instructor with a pump (870) or the instructor with a Benelli M-1, The Benelli was also faster than the pump
but we were talking in 100ths of a second difference.
So yes, an auto is faster but the difference (for a trained shotgunner) is really really small.

The best auto shooter will be slightly faster than the best pumpgunner as long as everything goes well. One dud shell though, and things change. Clearing a pump is faster than doing so with all autos I've familiar with.

And that's one things I have against the "Practical" shotgun segments of three gun matches. All too often it becomes a loading contest between autos.

IPSC lost its allure for me the day I saw a match won with a handgun I wouldn't bet my life on on the street. Same thing here....

The gas system's huge reduction in felt recoil gives an advantage, but the SLIGHTLY greater reliability of the pump makes it the better choice for the real world, IMO.

it's not meant to help, as someone's opinion on this board doesn't matter to you because they're not the one shooting your gun. it's meant to convey "whichever one you feel the most comfortable with", and whichever one it is you should use

I have both.

For indoor SD, I use my semiauto because it is patterned for my home and I have trained with it. I prefer this to remain clean & pristine for emergencies, nothing to do with speed. I have no doubt that it would perform admirably outdoors.

Outdoors, I do to my Remmy MM pump. Just seem smore likely to resist the elements and occasional knocks.

When duck hunting you may find yourself in some awkward situations like shooting kneeling from your knees....pumps are not that handy....autos are!
Plus with heavy loads a gas system reduces recoil. My Browning 2000
shoots 3inch or 2.75 simply by changing barrels and cuts recoil immensely.
Thats my main hunting gun. Also shoot trap with it as I worked on the stock where it joins the receiver so as to reduce pitch and make the stock straighter and only have 1.5 inches of pitch as well. I can float my birds or shoot their legs off so to speak. Go with the auto.
