A decades old Model 12 that has had about 10k shells ran thru it is pretty tough to beat as far as smoothness goes.

My deceased (1960) Grandpa's WWI vintage model 12 Winchester is as smooth as anything in the running, no doubt about it. It was completely rebuilt and refinished by the Winchester factory in the late 1940's after God only knows how many shells it fired, mostly at quail and dove and quite a few turkeys as well. Every moving part fits like a glove, and the slide action has an oily smooth feel that you don't find on modern guns, at least not guns in the price range that mere mortals like myself can afford.

I have a Rem 870 20 gauge I bought in 1958 for $89.95 and I have used it on quail and dove ever since with zero, nada problems. It's not half bad in the smoothness dept itself, but it can't touch that old model 12 for smooth operation. They don't make'em like that any more.

I think a M 12 Winchester would be hard to beat, but my Browning BPS is pretty smooth and they are still available new, not so the Winchester.

I've pumped most of them at one time or another during the past fifty years or so and, though many are plenty slick enough, my vote goes to the Remington Model 31 as being the smoothest of them all.

This all makes me wonder (I'd have said Ithaca 37.) - are these guns smooth because they are inherently smooth or are they smooth because they are old (and well broken in).
If we use the "action opens by itself when held vertical" criteria.....what guns will do that new out of the box?

I wouldn't say you were far off with the Ithaca 37, its in my top 3. I really cant decide. Some have said or implied this was a lame thread. I wanted to post a thread, that any one could participate in. See it's based on what you like. And it's hard for some one to tell you your wrong for what you like. Expert or not.:)
