Another NY Times article today re: mental health aspects of the Safe Act. The Times reports that mental health professionals feel the law goes too far, that virtually anybody being screened for mental health issues will wind up on the no gun list. It also goes on to say that they feel the threat of this will prevent people who need some help, but are not dangerous, from trying to get it.

The previous Times article reporting on the 34K people already on the list is evidently having effect, Cuomo is getting defensive about the article. He states hunters and sportsman have nothing to worry about, he's not against guns. I feel regardless of what he may say now, he's against guns. I would almost guarantee if he runs for president, which is what this is all about, attempting to remove most guns from the public's hands will be a major campaign issue for him.

The article also quotes the other candidate for governor, Rob Astorino (R) as stating he would rescind the Safe Act if elected.

Here's the new article: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/20/n...to-mentally-ill-people.html?ref=nyregion&_r=0

I love the part where he says hunters and sportsman have nothing to worry about and that he's not against guns. Something about "How do you know he's lying...easy, his lips are moving", comes to mind.

Yeah; he's not against guns, he's surrounded by guns 24/7. It's gun OWNERS that he hates just like all the rest of his NYC buddies.

Garbage in, garbage out. When you ram a draconian bill through a secret committee at midnight, this is what happens.

I'm glad to see that democracy is taking its course.

Hopefully, CT will be next. An extremely close governors race there, as opposed to NY which is, realistically, somewhat of a long shot.

I think it ironic that people are now starting understand what this business of disarming the population is about. This is just one more class of people being restricted to gun ownership. I'm thinking once you get on that list you probably never get off. What will be the next class to be restricted, maybe low income or people who buy more than a six pack every week. See where this is going?

It's a little bit like the terrorist watch list that was in place after 9/11. I was on it (probably because of my name) and had problems flying. I was always delayed and it became a real hassle for awhile.

It's no fun being targeted and restricted by the gov't for something you might do instead of something you actually did. People will eventually wake up to that fact and end this nonsense.

Remember

Cuomo is planning on a PRESIDENTIAL RUN,so y'all can enjoy how you will treat him when [ not IF ] that comes along.

Wont be just us people in NYS [ STATE ,not city ] that will have a shot at NOT electing him.

Sad that a rifle that has been in this state for about 55 years,is now demonized as a dangerous tool.

WITH NO RECORD OF ITS ACTUAL USE [ ok,maybe a couple of deaths ] .

There is NO actual percentage of those rifle in this state doing damage !!!.

And we are all watching the FACT that the State police will not release the number of those that are registered in state [ yes, mine is ].

The estimate is LESS than 10 % of rifles in state are on the list as "registered".

He's PO'd a lot more than the mental health professionals. Nov 2nd can't come soon enough. If you're on this forum and live or know people in NY. Please do everything you can to vote Rob Asorino on election day. Its not just unSAFE act either. Common Core. Fracking. Casinos. Moorland Commission. The list goes on. He belongs in jail. Get out the vote.

Many people in many walks of life are refusing to seek out mental healthcare assistance because of measures like this. NYS is my home and I miss it dearly, and intend to move back there one day. I certainly hope scum like Cuomo are long gone by the time I go back.

Tonight

Cuomo & Astorino will debate on TV --- this is the only debate as far as they are advertising.

Y'all might want to watch at 8 PM Eastern Time.

When an emergency room nurse can have you put on the no gun list, it sounds like NY has gone far beyond federal standards. Note the federal statute says not for observation or voluntary commitment, but in NY it appears a health professional can add you to the list just on their recommendation regardless of why you're there.

There is also the issue of zero due process before you are stripped of a right expressly stated in the Bill of Rights and now recognized by the Supreme Court twice.

Also the most relevant factor in this discussion. In WA. I-591 addresses this. We will vote on it in a few days. Most probably don't even understand why it's on the ballot.
