replaced my ruger 10/22 barrel with a heavy duty stainless bull barrel. its an E. R. Shaw Barrel Ruger 10/22 22 Long Rifle .920" Diameter 1 in 16" Twist 18" Stainless Steel

first visit to the range and about every other shot failed to go off. the hammer is hitting the round, but no bang. tried 3 different brans of ammo, same thing. is this a known issue? do i have to get a much stronger hammer spring or is the barrel out of spec

Check to see whether the extractor slot in the barrel aligns with the extractor. If it doesn't, loosen the bolts and rotate the barrel until it aligns better, or use a Moto-Tool or needle file to widen the slot to allow the bolt to close fully.

Another possibility: Your new barrel may have a match chamber that is too tight/short to use the ammo you've been using. Make sure the bolt seats against the barrel face with a round in the chamber. Try some match ammo that may have tighter dimensions.

I can't think of any other reasons why the rifle should start having misfires if it didn't before the barrel installation.

If all else fails, get a new mainspring, or polish the spring strut and lightly lube it, then try again.

Also, check the firing pin strikes on empty shells to see if they're shallow and wide. The firing pin nose can be lightly ground to make the pin strikes deeper, but be careful to not make it a chisel tip that can pierce primers. There's a lot of information about firing pin shapes and other mods on Rimfirecentral.com.

Just guessing but how about a headspace issue? If the barrel isn't seated to the proper depth, everything as a result could be just a bit too far forward for the firing pin to make good hits on the cartridge.

I agree that it's probably a barrel fitment issue. On an aftermarket barrel, sometimes you have to polish the shank to get it to seat properly.

10/22 misfires

I agree with Picher. I replaced my OEM barrel with an Adams&Bennet. Also changed to a Volquarsen Trigger about the same time. I began experiencing numerous misfires.
1.) The target barrel is much tighter. (cartridge seats deep enough to allow firing but not snug enough for solid firing pin impact)
2.) Volquarsen Triggers intentially have a weaker spring which allows the lighter trigger pull I love.
3.) In my case, the bolt indent atop the factory bolt was insufficient to hold the firing pin in the optimal down position to insure solid impact on the rim of .22 cartridge. I will be receiving a "pinned firing pin" from CPC which will relieve this issue. (I hope?)

My first .920" bbl had the chamber chamfer machined too deep. Shell would sit in chamber .005" deeper than the factory bbl. They did make it right.

Compare seating with both bbls removed from receiver, see if you have a difference.

Sounds like a headspacing issue. Check the shank to ensure that the bbl is flush with the receiver (doubt that this is a problem because it is an ER Shaw), then try match ammo to confirm that it isn't simply a tighter chamber.
