Is it possible for a gunsmith/machinist to mill a HBAR or heavy profile AR-15 barrel down to A-1 specs? I'm sorry, but I don't think 8 pounds for a 16" barrel carbine is acceptable.

Yep. Kurts Kustom Firearms(KKF) springs immediately to mind. I am sure that there are many others that can do the same.

My HBAR Dissapator will be going to Kurt's someday(soon, I hope).

Actually, Bushmaster is making a light profile barrel right now. Much easier tham doing it yourself, and probably a lot cheaper...

Hope this helps.

Actually, I was more interested in a 20" A1 profile barrel. Fulton Armory makes one, but it has a 1:12 twist and the old style 3 prong flash suppressor.

You are talking about an hour of lathe work. Easy stuff, really.

My own preference is for medium-weight 18" barrels, so I end up in front of the Monarch more than I care to admit. Turning a 1.1" barrel down to .750, recrowning it at 18", and threading it for a comp is such fun.

Just finished my AR10...cut a 24" AR10(T) barrel down to .800 behind the gas block, then .750 forward to the 18" 11 degree recrowned muzzle. Threaded it 9/16-28 and fit a large JP brake. I'm quite fond of how it shoots now!

Anyway, a 20" A1 is a fairly simple profile. Put it on a pre-ban and I can even thread it 1/2-28 for the flash suppressor. Drop me a line and we can discuss shipping and the going rate for lunch around here ;)

I have a 20" HBAR that I was thinking about having turned down to A2 spec and threaded if the ban goes away.

Two questions: First, is a same-spec refinish included with that price? $85 is cheaper than I envisioned. Second, is there going to be any way to attach a bayo lug to during-the-ban uppers?

A new front sight base would do it. If you're looking to turn down your barrel and get a new front sight base, why not go A1 profile? It's even lighter than the A2 (I have no idea why the A-2 is only heavy in front of the handguard  ), and you can replace the front site with one that has a bayonet lug AND an A1 profile while you're at it.

"is a same-spec refinish included with that price? "

I had a barrel turned down by Kurt. I don't remember exactly what it cost, but it was very reasonable. Actually let me take that back, I had the barrel turned down and had him install one of his muzzle brakes on it and I think the whole thing was around $100 and yes, it was finished beautifully. I also had Kurt remove the "Mini-Y Comp" muzzle brake from a Bushmaster "M4" and had him install one of his muzzle brakes on that. The work was great. It does take awile to get back.
