I have been shooting muzzle loaders for about 10 years now. I have always used Goex powder, either 2f or 3f depending what I am shooting.

With the closing of Goex and black powder being hard to come by now. Is it possible to use Pyrodex P or RS for your load and still prime my frizzen pan with 4f Goex?

I apologize if this question has been asked on here before.

While it IS possible, you will have all the issues that go along with Pyrodex and that includes spotty ignition in a flintlock.

There ARE other brands of black powder available besides Goex. I shoot Swiss and supply is no problem if you're willing to buy more than one or two pounds at a time.

I appreciate the info. I’d definitely be fine with shooting Swiss. The local shop I use always sold Goex and it’s really hard to find. I’ve shot Swiss before and it did quite well in my flintlock.

Where do you get your Swiss from?

Thanks!

Its been recommended to use a 10 grain black powder booster charge under the main load of Pyrodex.
If you can get a hold of real black there's no need for 4f in the pan, whatever you use for the main charge works just as well or better.

It's not so available now either.... Buffalo Arms has Scheutzen reenactor in stock, which should be good in the pan and as booster charge under the pyrodex down the bore (you could also use it as your main charge but consistency would be questionable IMO. They also have Swiss 1F in stock, which would be good for the same purpose but is a LOT more expensive, and you might need to grind some a bit finer for the pan. I've never tried 1F in the pan. 2F through 4F is HARD to find at the moment, if it can be found at all.

Back Creek Gun Shop.

The days of buying a pound or two at the local shop are pretty much gone. It's too expensive to stock do ordering is easier. Poll your order with some reenactors or join a NMLRA charter club to keep hazmat charges low.

You might ask your local guy if he’d consider stocking Swiss? There may be other customers who bought all their powder from him and would continue to do so.

with a duplex load do you get hang fires, KITCHEE POW! and does accuracy suffer?

The lock should be properly supported internally by a bridle to support the tumbler, all parts polished and properly hardened, frizzen hardened, and most important the touch hole has to be in the right place and the right size.

Also if you put too much powder in the pan you will get the same result.

I've experimented with creating 4F out of Pyrodex and it works!! I shoot a percussion GPR, but like the idea of a duplex load to ensure ignition. I used a porcelain Morter and Pestle and carefully ground down a 1/2 teaspoonful at a time until I got about 100 grains.
