Plenty of AKs now on the market, with MUCh to choose from. Not as much "milspec" available as with the AR market.

I know that many say that having a 'REAL' AK receiver as in a WASR 10, SAR, FEG, or SAIGA/Arsenal are preferable - why? What makes their sheet metal better?

Reason I ask, is that I saw an add from one maker of a "premium" AK, and they touted that DCI make the only receiver BETTER than original...

Thanks.

I remember earlier in the century when parts kits abounded, and the receivers available were Ohio Rapid Fire and ITM. These were OK shells, but then NoDakSpud came on the scene. These are very fine receivers, and I would put them up against any other stamped receiver for straightness, and uniformity any time.

Now, slip into the world of milled receivers and you step into a realm in which I am only comfortable with the PolyTech and Arsenal offerings. This is not to say that others are not good, just that I know these and I am comfortable with them.

As far as "MilSpec" goes, I don't even know what that means. Do you? I mean, really, do you? I don't think anybody knows what that means.

If your receiver shell is straight, and the rivets all line up and it is properly heat treated, you will build a nice Kalashnikov.

Buy a B-west-made AK and find out. . .seriously, though, the com-bloc countries devoted a lot of attention to the single-most important facet of their national security. Like practically any gun part, AKM receivers need to be dimensionally accurate and properly heat treated to work well and last more than a few rounds. It's easy to take for granted the notion that "all AK receivers are the same" until you find some that are junk. As Stubbicat pointed out, some of the U.S.-made ones were just that.

You know all those AK's you've seen with cracked or warped receivers? Yeah, me neither. People got to have something to worry about though.

How about egged out FCG pivot holes and ejectors that are dented into uselessness after 200 rounds? Those things have happened to people that used crap receivers. BSW

OK - which ones are good???

Are they as good as an ORIGINAL FEG, Rommy, Russian. etc.?

I have been very happy with a variety of NoDak receivers. OTOH, I've made a couple from flats and they work just fine too.
