I am liking the looks of the new Smith and Wesson model 29-8. I have seen both the Mountain Gun and "Dirty Harry Special". What is the quality like on these? How is the bluing? Is the 6 1/2" a 4 screw frame as well?

Thanks.

Its not the highly polished, deep deep blue of days gone by, buts its evenly applied.

I've put over a thousand rounds through this one and it still locks up as tight as the day I bought it. Shoots very well.....makes me look like I know what I'm doing some days.

My 29-8 6.5" has a deep. even blue, very well done. The fit and polish is also pretty good, particularly compared to some of the recent 629's I've looked at. The barrel rib could have had a bit more polish in my opinion. Lockup is tight.

It is also fun to shoot!

And yes, it is a four screw.

I'm confused. What do you mean by four screw? That looks like a current production revolver; I don't have my history of S&W book handy but I do know that they did away with the fourth side-plate screw along time ago. What are you counting as the fourth screw?

S&W did an N-frame heritage series revolver, and they built the Model 29-8's from the leftovers. On the right side of the gun at the top of the side plate is a fourth screw (there is a screw hidden underneath the grip).

Below is a 29-3 compared to a 29-8:

The bluing is even, but nowhere near as deep as the old original formula.
The Mountain Gun does have a 4 screw frame as it's a leftover from the Heritage series. The regular production models are the standard 3 screw.
The action on my MG was nothing to write home about, but did clean up nicely with a little polishing and a spring kit.

Ah...the heritage series. I forgot about those.

Seems a bit silly; use the MIM parts, add that %$#@ internal lock, but give it an 'olde timey' feature like the fourth sideplate screw.

I'm sure it made sense to the marketing department.

The sideplate screw was actually the 5th screw. Which was phased out beginning 1955.

The 4th screw was on the underside of the frame just ahead of the triggerguard. This screw retained the locking bolt spring. It was phased put beginning in 1961.
