Is a five screw pre 27 Smith and Wesson a curio and relic? It is not a "registered" magnum.

The closest thing I can find in the BATF list is a 357 hand ejector with SN range of 45768 to 60000.

If it is a C&R, it is 97% with 3.5 inch barrel. About what is it worth?

Thanx.

Do you know the mfg date? If it's over 50 years old that simplifies things greatly (automatically C&R) other than that I think it will have to go through an 01 FFL. When in doubt it can't hurt to transfer though an 01, except for the cost and convenience of course.

That gun would be called the "357 Magnum," if I'm not mistaken. The older Smiths had names. Sounds like a great gun! :)

S&W started using the model numbers in 1957 and guns made prior to that date are usually referred to as "pre-model" guns, as in a pre-27.

As noted the gun must be 50 years old or a limited productuion issue to be C&R. You need to check the seerial number to see if the gun was made before 1955. The serial on this gun likely starts with the letter S.

The 3.5 barrel in this model is highly sought after and if really 97% would perhaps bring $700-$800 or more at auction. I just saw two more recent 3.5 Model 27-2s offered at $620 and both were snapped up within minutes. A pre-27 would bring more but how much more is anyone's guess. I am no longer shocked at what some people will pay for these.

He said he wanted $1200. I declined. I'm looking for a 27-2.
