Question 44 special in 44 magnum Contender ?

Simple question, can I shoot a 44 special cartridge in a 44 magnum Thompson Contender?
Also wonder if I can shoot a 5.56 in a .223 TC?

Yes, all reports that I've seen indicate you'll have no trouble. Might want to check and see if you have some freebore left before the bullet hits the rifling, but I expect you will. I've read of owners measuring and finding that the Contender's leade was plenty long enough.
 
With the .44Spl the ONLY downside is that with 50 to 100 rounds it will form a crud ring just in front of the mouth of the shorter Special cases. You'll want to clean that crusty ring away before you shoot any more magnum length cases.
