I have a 28" Benelli M1S90 barrel that I want to have professionally cut down to 21". They are not going to install chokes, just relocate the bead sight.

Will the resulting 21" barrel be cylinder choke? My purpose for this gun will be home defense.

While it is easy to do at home, any quality machine shop can do it and face it square for a small sum.

Is this a ribbed version? If so it takes a little more consideration than just lopping it off and cold bluing the exposed metal.

A pipe-cutter should not be used, as it will leave a large bur inside the barrel that will be hard to remove with your chrome lined Benelli barrel.
And it can't be used if the barrel has a vent rib on it as yours undoubtedly does.

Oh! And your chrome lined bore presents another challenge if you don't want the chrome flaking off at the muzzle where you cut it no matter what jury rigged cutting method you use.

A machine shop hasn't got a clue about how vent ribs are attached, or where you can cut them, or the proper size tap to re-mount the front bead.

Take it to a gunsmith who knows what he is doing and has the proper tap.

Or sell it and buy the barrel you want.

Or, send it to Carlson's, and have them cut it, move the sight on the rib, and install choke tubes so it will still be useful for something besides blasting an imagined burglar.

I never got the hang of getting a pipe cutter over the rib. But I have to say I would not have the fortitude to chop a 1200 dollar Benelli! I salute you!
I dont think after a couple rounds of buck they would even notice a few chrome flakes.

I agree this whole thing just gives me cold chills.

You could buy a complete pawn shop Remington 870 & a hacksaw for way less then the Benelli barrel alone is worth if you don't screw with it.

The professional I mentioned that I wanted to cut it down is actually Carlsons. If they do it, do you think there are issues with the chrome flaking off?

While I agree a gunsmith would be best, they are not always readily available. I chucked my gold barrel in a lathe and cut and faced it, most machine shops do know how to cut and square odd shaped materials, but how would I know only been doing it off and on for 26yrs, both aviation and automotive.

I would also bet they would know how to identify a thread pitch.

Went to a metal shop once, he said Theres the saw, don't kill yourself and walked off.but he also didn't charge me anything.

Chrome flaking non-issue, chrome reaming maybe. But if anybody knows how its them.

I only say this because I tried to get an Italian double opened up and they(diff. outfit) wouldn't because of chrome bore.

I say Hello, Skeetgun!

went back, read post, no chokes, no ream, you said all that ,in OP my bad.

Use the tube cutter to mark the cut. Hacksaw is obvious. File and/or grinder is obvious. 400 grit sandpaper on a dowel will finish the job.
If he cuts a chromed bore barrel for SD, he probably doesn't care about the chrome. I wouldn't.

Now the vent rib is another story. I would find the soldered place around the chosen length, change the blade in my chop saw and proceed.
