Why do some gun range only let you shoot brass ammo and not steel?

I go to TopGun indoor range in Houston, but they always do an ammo check before they let you in. If you have steel ammo, then they take it up and give it back to you at the end of your session. Just curious, why do they not allow steel ammo? is it not safe to shoot steel?

Just to clarify, I am talking about steel and brass casing of the bullet. :)

The steel vs. brass cartridge case? Or a steel bullet jacket/core?

If it's the bullet jacket they're worried about, they're just trying to protect their range backstop and prevent riccochets.

If it's the cartridge case they're worried about, it is probably because they collect the fired brass and sell it as a way to increase profits, and they don't want to have to pick worthless steel cases out of the sellable brass ones.

Do they do the same for Aluminum-cased ammo like CCI Blazer?

I'd also add in my own little thought to Sam1911's post which I think is dead-on, which is that alot of people still have an aversion to steel case ammo as being "communist" product that is just un-American. Or that the lacquer (now polymer) coatings gunked up guns or broke extractors.
I attribute it to mostly ammo snobbery. I understand the steel core bullet/backstop argument though.

The indoor range I go to in Houston says no steel for the very reasons mentioned.
They dont want to get the load of brass rejected at the metal recycler because of the steel cases mixed with it and they dont want to have to go through the hassle of seperating it as well.
